Anne Treadwell Suratt, 90, passed away Monday, Aug. 14, 2017, at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Plymouth in Plymouth, Massachusetts after a brief illness.
Born May 4, 1927 in Hampton, Anne was the youngest daughter of the late Ewell E. and Lillian O. Treadwell. She was a graduate of Decatur Girls High School, and earned an undergraduate degree from Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia, as well as a master’s degree in chemistry from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.
Anne was the coordinator of the chemistry lab at Concord High School in Wilmington, Delaware for several years. She then went on to become the lab coordinator for the University of Delaware, where she worked until her retirement. She literally wrote the book for general chemistry labs at UD.
She spent her adult life in Wilmington, Delaware with her husband of 61 years, Edgar C. Suratt, who passed away in 2011.  Along with Ed, Anne enjoyed travel, and together they were able to visit every continent. They shared a passion for outdoor activities, including hiking, bicycling, white water kayaking and snow skiing.  She was also an avid reader and crafter, taking pleasure in picture framing, sewing, embroidery and quilting.
Anne’s philanthropic interests included ongoing contributions to Agnes Scott College, volunteering at several theatre auditoriums, and crafting accessible garments for special needs patients at hospitals in Delaware and Massachusetts. Her innate compassion and generosity even led Anne to open her home to family members of some of those patients. In recent years, Anne lived in Marshfield, Massachusetts, near her daughter, Susan.
Anne is survived by her four children, Celia Suratt (Paul) Powell of North Andover, Massachusetts; John C. (Amy Thomas) Suratt of Stone Mountain, Georgia; Steven E. Suratt of Atlanta, Georgia; and Susan Suratt (Jeff) Turley of Marshfield, Massachusetts; as well as five grandchildren (Allie Suratt, Taylor Suratt, and Collen Suratt; Anna Turley (Jeremiah) Griffith, and Michael Turley) and two cats.
A memorial service will be held in Decatur on Sept. 23. Memorial donations may be made to Agnes Scott College, 141 E College Avenue, Decatur, Georgia, 30030.
