Mr. Joseph William Johnson, 77, loving husband of 5 years to Deloris, entered into his eternal rest on Saturday evening, Jan. 14, 2017 at Augusta University from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Funeral services in Georgia will be held at 7:00 PM, Thursday evening, Jan. 19, 2017 with Rev. Tim Hoover officiating. Funeral services in Tennessee will be held at 2 p.m. Friday afternoon, Jan. 20, 2017 at Ebenezer Baptist Church (Vonore). Interment with full military honors will follow in the church cemetery.
One of six children born to the late Beulah White Johnson and the late Phillip C. Johnson, Joe grew up in Monroe County, Tennessee. A patriot, he joined the Army at age 17 and served for 20 years before retiring. He served in Vietnam and was an airplane mechanic. He moved to Georgia to be near his sister and started work as an auto mechanic with Satcher Auto in Augusta. Not only was he mechanically inclined but also held a technical degree in welding. He was very active and was always busy—usually working on some sort of motor or engine. He did enjoy fishing, bowling, and playing golf. He also liked to cook and had a knack for grilling. Joe loved his Lord and Savior and served Him at Fellowship Bible Christian Church. He never met a stranger and was known as a jokester and for his tall tales. He was happiest visiting with his family and friends, especially those in Tennessee. Having a generous spirit, Joe was good-hearted and always had a positive, can-do attitude that uplifted others. His death leaves a void that no one can fill, but his love leaves us memories that no one can steal.
Joe was also preceded in death by his brother, Rick Johnson. Other survivors include his children, Chuck D. Johnson (Daphne), Sherry L. Johnson, Joseph W. Johnson, Jr. (Keila) and Brian K. Johnson (Amy); four siblings, Nina Freeman, Maggie Shaw, Randy Johnson (Becky) and Gene Johnson (Annaray); nine grandchildren, Jacqueline, Whitney, Tommy, Tisha, Crystal, Michael, Julia, Britney and Katie; twelve great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Because of this unexpected loss, the family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made directly to James Funeral Home, PO Box 588, Wrens GA 30833.
The family will receive friends at James Funeral Home from 5 – 7 p.m. Thursday evening, Jan. 19, 2017 and at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Vonore TN, from 1 – 2 p.m. Friday afternoon, Jan. 20, 2017.
