Mrs. Bessie Mills McCall Broadnax

Mrs. Bessie Mills McCall Broadnax, 88, of Mitchell entered into rest on Friday, Sept. 25, 2015, at Gibson Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Broadnax was a native of Knox, Ky., but had lived in Mitchell for many years. She was a daughter of the late John and Lily Stewart Mills. Mrs. Broadnax was a homemaker and a member of Emmanuel Holiness Church.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 17, 2015, at Taylor Funeral Home, with Rev. Lonnie McCall and Rev. Jacky Downs officiating. Burial followed in Mineral Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jim Broadnax; brothers, Bill Mills and Bobby Mills; and sister, Hazel Gordon.

Survivors include her sons, Rev. Lonnie (Elaine) McCall of Appling, and Jimmy (Sara) Broadnax of Mitchell; daughters, Charlene (Sam) Griswold and Barbara May, both of Mitchell; brother, Carl Mills of Gibson; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Michael May, Phillip May, Eddie May, Jimmy Braodnax, David Bales and Austin Justice.

If so desired, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mineral Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Nellie Rae Drayton Hall

Mrs. Nellie Rae Drayton Hall, 69, of Wrens entered into rest on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2015, at Jefferson Hospital, Louisville. 

Mrs. Hall was born on March 12, 1946, to the Late Willie James (Mary Willie Smith) Drayton. She was born in Louisville and raised in Wrens. She attended the Jefferson County School System. Mrs. Hall worked for many years at Fort Gordon as a cook and then as a miner operator at J.M. Huber Corporation, Wrens, and was also a homemaker.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Sept. 21, 2015, at 1 p.m. at Wrens Chapel AME Church, with Rev. Dr. Cassandra Hill presiding and Rev. Ella Samuels as eulogist. Interment was in Wrens Memorial Cemetery. 

She was preceded in death by her son, Johnnie A. Hall Jr.; and siblings, Charles Drayton Sr., Eddie Drayton Sr., Shirley Ann Leigh and Raymond Hannah.

Survivors include her daughters, Raylynn (Willie) Avery of Waynesboro, and Minnie Hall of Savannah; son, Patrick Hall Sr. of Wrens; grandchildren, Tiffany (Eugene) Love Jr. and Willie Avery Jr., both of Wrens, Briana Nicholson and Sierra Soto, both of Atlanta, Untavious Johnson and Patrick Hall Jr., both of Louisville, Whitney Freeman of Augusta, Shakayla Avery of  Waynesboro, and Devonte’ Nelson of Savannah; eight great-grandchildren; siblings, Mary Jo (Charles) Freeman of Augusta,  Dolly Terrell, Leotis Hales and Bobbie Drayton, all of Wrens, Mattie Frails of Harlem, and Otis Drayton and Sonny Drayton, both of Maryland; brother-in-law, Henry Leigh of Villa Rica, and Charles Hall of Augusta; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Freeman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. 

Mrs. Alma Hutchins McTier

Mrs. Alma Hutchins McTier, 91, of Phoenix, Ariz., entered into rest on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2015, at her grandson’s home in Phoenix, Ariz.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 10, in Thomson First Baptist Church Chapel. Burial will follow in Westview Cemetery, Thomson.

Mrs. McTier was born in Louisville and lived in Wadley until age 19, when she and her new husband moved to Thomson. She was a member of Thomson First Baptist Church. She moved to Phoenix, Ariz., in 2009.

A memorial service was held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2015, at Hansen Desert Hills Chapel, Scottsdale, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her husband, O.W. McTier.

Survivors include her daughters, Gail Mihaylo (Charles) Mihaylo of Phoenix, Ariz., and Jane Fordham (Wayne) Fordham of Lynn Haven, Fla.; grandchildren, Christopher Mihaylo, Joshua Mihaylo, Tamryn Hynes, Zachary Fordham and Casi Fordham; and nine great-grandchildren.

Curtis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

 

Mr. Morris Clifford “M.C.” Little

Mr. Morris Clifford “M.C.” Little, 97, of Nicholson entered into rest on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2015.

Mr. Little was born in Wrens in 1918 to the late Clifford and Mary Smith Little. He graduated from Walker Baptist Boarding School in 1937, and continued his studies at Savannah State, graduating number three in his class in 1941 with a B.S. degree in agricultural science. On Dec. 18, 1953, he earned a master’s of science degree from Iowa State College. He married the former late Josie Gresham. They had two children, Perry and Jerome. Upon graduation, he moved to Wadley and taught school for several years. He moved to Monroe, where he was employed as a county extension agent for the University of Georgia’s Agricultural Extension Service. He was promoted at UGA to associate professor of agricultural science, and retired from the position in 1974. He also worked at Grandview Nursing Home and for the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, where he was employed as the first African-American bailiff. At the age of 80, he officially retired. He gave many years community service in various organizations and was a member of Sardis Presbyterian. He served as an elder, treasurer, superintendent of Sunday school, Sunday school teacher, session member and co-chair of the 100 Year Celebration.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2015, at Bernstein Funeral Home, Athens, at 11 a.m., with Pastor Cheryl Hargrove Barnes officiating and Rev. R.E. Cooper as eulogist. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and sisters, Etta Frances, Altia “Ann” and Corine.

Survivors include his grandchildren, Matthew (Nandie) Heglar, Marissa (Robert III) Heglar and Josie Lauren Little; daughter-in-law, Sonjia Little; great-grandchildren, Reigan, Ivey and Gabrielle; friends, Pamela Heglar, Mildred Hill and Jimmy Hill; nieces, Clarine Hamilton (Robert), Carol Davis, Irma Clark Coleman and Victoria Crespo (John); nephew, James King (Barbara Ann); cousins, Winfred Smith (Bernice), Orie Johnson (Lillie) and Willie Broadus (Yvonne); and a host of other relatives and friends.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Sardis Presbyterian Church, 652 Gordon Street, Jefferson, GA 30549.

Mrs. Elizabeth C. Muns

Mrs. Elizabeth C. Muns, 78, of Augusta entered into rest on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2015, at Cornerstone Compassion Center.

Mrs. Muns was born in Glascock County to the late Carl Cooper and the late Minnie Copeland Cooper. She lived in Thomson for many years and was a homemaker.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2015, at Beggs Funeral Home, with Rev. Cliff O’Byan and Ben Huff officiating. Interment followed at Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Jerry Muns.

Survivors include her daughters, Rhonda Branon (Fred) and Judy Hanks, both of Martinez, and Theresa Musick (Kevin) of Grovetown; grandchildren, Jeremy Branon, Jeffrey Branon, Jennifer Tapley, B.C. Wells III and Levi Hanks; and four great-grandchildren.

Beggs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
