Margaret Anne Gay Stewart, 75, entered into her eternal rest Monday morning, Oct. 23, 2017, at her home.  Funeral services were held in the James Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. Friday afternoon, Oct. 27, 2017, with Brother Freddie Turner officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Moriah Church Cemetery in Matthews.
One of eight children born to the late Jessie Mae Rabun Usry and the late Pughsley Gay, Margaret was a native of Wrens. Because her father was a farmer, the family was constantly moving from farm to farm in the surrounding counties.
She attended local schools in the area before leaving the education system and working at Stapleton Garment Company and later at Kellers Manufacturing in Waynesboro.  After marrying in 1961, she lived in Matthews until her children were grown and her health declined at which time she moved to Thomson.
She loved being a mother, giving her family her best and providing a safe haven for them.  Margaret read her Bible and made sure that she read Bible stories to her children.  She enjoyed fishing and crocheting, but her favorite pastime was shopping.
Margaret was known for her collection of eagles, lighthouses, chihuahuas and Elvis memorabilia. Music soothed her soul and had a special love for Elvis, Conway Twitty, Alan Jackson and southern gospel music.
Having a great sense of humor, she was funny and fun to be around; but she was also one to “speak her mind” and was always ready to share her opinions. A loyal friend and devoted mother, her loving, generous spirit will be greatly missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
Margaret is also preceded in death by her siblings, Billy Gay, Juddy Gay, Milo Gay, Carolyn Newman and Patricia Gay.  Survivors include her three children, Nancy S. Birt, Wendy Stewart and James Belles; two sisters, Agnes Swint and June Kitchens; three grandchildren, Nikki Tarver, Hope Nicole Stewart and Nicholas Stewart; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.  Pallbearers will be David Gay, Jerry Kitchens, Stevie Reese, William Stephens, Nicholas Stewart and Kevin Wood.
The family received friends at the residence of Frances Gay in Matthews and at James Funeral Home from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday evening, Oct. 26, 2017.
