Cleo Hicks Lewis of Louisville, departed this life on Thursday, May 18, 2017, at Doctor’s Hospital, Augusta.
Services celebrating her life will be held on Thursday, May 25, 2017 at 2 p.m. at The Stone Springfield A.M.E. Church, 7476 Highway 296, Stapleton, with the Rev. Forrest Dickey presiding, the Rev. Alvin Lewis eulogist. Burial will be held in the Mays Grove Baptist Church Cemetery,
Cleo was born on Sept. 24, 1931, in Bartow to the parentage of the late Joseph and Ollie Mae Newsome Hicks. At an early age she was baptized and joined the Tarvers Grove Baptist Church.
Early in life at the age of 15, she married the late Alvin Lewis, Sr., and joined and worshipped with him at the Mays Grove Baptist Church. Unto this union, nine children were conceived and birthed. After nursing them until they were school-age, Cleo, after careful consideration, enrolled at Sandersville Technical College where she earned her Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) certificate.  She soon started working at the local hospital in Jefferson County and surrounding nursing homes before accepting her title as Industrial Corporate Nurse at the now defunct Thermo King Corporation of Louisville.
While working both jobs as a mother and a nurse, she served in many capacities to include the senior choir and the missionary society at The Mays Grove Baptist Church. As a community change agent during her early years of marriage and workmanship, she was an advocate of the Jefferson County Branch of the NAACP where she served in many capacities including secretary. For her hard work and labor, she received numerous awards and recognitions throughout her many employments; she was truly a champion for the Lord, seeking to bring others into the fold.
Preceding her in death were her two siblings, Joseph Hicks, Jr. and Neuteen Lewis.  Also preceding her in death were two sons:  Leon Lewis and Roosevelt Lewis.
Still here to remember and cherish her legacy are five sons: Rev. Alvin (Lynda) Lewis, Jr., Augusta, Obediah (Gloria) Lewis, Keysville, Joseph (Hattie)) Lewis, Macon, Arthur (Annie) Lewis, Atlanta, and Dr. Michael Larinso Lewis, Louisville. Remembering her also are two daughters:  Gwendolyn Denise Lewis, Louisville, and Ollie Marie Lewis, Mocksville, NC. She leaves behind one sister, Bertha Mae Lewis, Philadelphia, PA and one brother John Wesley (Pearl) Hicks, Wilmington, DE.  Others who will miss her are a number of sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, 23 grandchildren, and a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.  Others remembering her life here on earth are cousins, family, co-workers, and friends.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons.  Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of the Mays Grove Baptist Church.
Friends and well-wishers may call at the residence of her daughter, Gwendolyn Lewis, at 1923 Saint Claire Road, Louisville, GA.  Davis Funeral Home is in charge of these services.
