Mrs. Eugenia Lee "Gene" Clark

Eugenia Lee “Gene” Clark, 97, of Brandon Wilde in Evans, peacefully departed this life for her eternal home on Saturday evening at the University Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. from the Louisville Presbyterian Church. Reverend Dale Thornton, former minister of the Louisville United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in the Louisville City Cemetery.
A native of Monroe, Mrs. Clark was the eldest child of the late Ruth Radford and Dennie Bazant Launius, of Monroe. She was educated in the Monroe Public School System and following in her mother’s footsteps, attended Wesleyan College in Macon where she graduated in the class of 1940; she was the last survivor of the Wesleyan Class of ‘40. During World War II, she worked in Atlanta and in April of 1946, moved to Louisville when she married her beloved husband First Lieutenant Samuel Matthias Clark, of Louisville, who predeceased her in 2002. A devoted wife, mother, and member of her church and community, she made her home in Louisville until her move to Brandon Wilde in 2009.
In addition to working with her husband in his local Louisville hardware business, she devoted her life to her church, her family and her three sons. She volunteered in a number of positions in the local school, PTA, and was active in the Louisville United Methodist Church choir, served as a church pianist, held positions in the Louisville United Methodist Women, and was one of the original members of the Jefferson Hospital Pink Ladies Organization where she was instrumental in establishing the hospital’s interdenominational chapel which was dedicated to her.
A loving mother and grandmother, she is survived by her sons: Samuel Matthias Clark and his wife Mary Margaret, of Louisville; James Dennie Clark and his wife Rebecca, of Marietta; and Eugene Lee Clark and his wife Deborah, of Martinez. Other survivors include her grandchildren: Dr. Jessica Clark and her husband Brad Johnson, of Evans; Samuel Matthias (Matt) Clark, III, and his wife Beth, of Louisville; James Russell Clark, of Marietta; Sarah Elizabeth Clark Bertram and her husband Andy, of Alpharetta; Helen Eugenia Clark Price and her husband Matt, of Alpharetta; Catherine Lane Clark Hopkins and her husband David, of Martinez; Miller Bradley Clark, of Atlanta, and Cathleen Elizabeth Clark, of Louisville. Great grandchildren are Samuel Brinson Clark, Addison Fair Clark, and Emerson Mize Clark, all of Louisville, and Isabella Brooklyn Price, of Alpharetta. She is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her brother John Crosby Launius and his wife Mildred (Billie) of Monroe, GA, and by her sister, Martha Launius Thomas and her husband Bernard, of Lexington, NC. She had been the last surviving member of her generation of her family and her husband’s family.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in-law.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Sam and Mary Margaret Clark, 1112 Grandberry Lane, Louisville, Georgia, Tuesday evening from 5 until 7.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Building and Church Restoration Fund for the Louisville United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 269, Seventh Street, Louisville, GA. 30434 or to the Pink Ladies Auxilary, c/o Jefferson Hospital, Peachtree Street, Louisville, Georgia 30434.
