Mr. Clarence William Holley

Clarence William Holley, 90, loving husband of 60 ½ years to Nell Anderson Holley, entered into his eternal rest Tuesday evening, Dec.19, 2017, at University Hospital in Augusta. The funeral service to celebrate his life was held in the James Funeral Home Chapel at 11 a.m., Saturday morning, Dec. 23, with Rev. Albert Stroupe officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in the Wrens Memorial Cemetery.
One of eleven children born to the late Mary Elizabeth Johnson Holley Terry and the late Jasper Lee Holley, Clarence was a lifetime resident of Wrens.  After graduating from Wrens High School, he proudly joined the Navy serving our country in World War II.  A patriot, he was an honored member of American Legion Post 229 for 33 years. Upon his return home, he farmed for a while before working as a welder for Southern Natural Gas, retiring after 37 years of service. He then unselfishly volunteered at University McDuffie for 20 years. Clarence enjoyed working in his shop “fixin’ things.”  Always a thinker and a tinkerer, he held a patent for a hanging basket self-watering apparatus. He found great enjoyment drinking his morning coffee and watching birds as they visited his bird feeders. He also loved gospel music and singing in the church choir, the men’s quartet, and with his family at their reunions.  His most important role in life was being a born-again Christian. As a young boy, Clarence accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior and served Him faithfully at Mt. Horeb Baptist Church where he was a deacon for over 50 years, Sunday School director and teacher, song leader, choir member, church treasurer, building and grounds maintenance ....just to name a few of the various positions he held over the years.  His ministry included faithful, regular visits to the sick and those in the nursing home.  He loved people—with his main concern being their spiritual well-being.  This strong-willed man of faith was a devoted, loving husband and father who had an absolute, unconditional love for his family. We mourn his passing, but celebrate him reaching his eternal home where he is singing in that heavenly choir.
Clarence is also preceded in death by his precious son, Wayne William Holley; two sisters, Sandra H. Norton and Sarah H. Gay; and step-father, Ernest Terry. Other survivors include his two daughters, Susan H. Newsome (Steven) and Nancy H. Chance; eight siblings, Annie H. Anderson, David Holley, Gloria H. Jones, Janette H. Perdue (W.J.), Lamar Holley (Bonnie), Shirley H. Reese (Temus), Robert Holley (Ruby) and Tony Holley (Gail); two grandsons, Kyle Eisele (Leigh) and Austin Newsome (Jessica); three great grandchildren, Ethan Andrews, Jason Andrews and Clayton Ford; two brothers-in-law, Judson Gay and Jimmy Norton; step sister, Jimmie T. Gay; a multitude of nieces, nephews and cousins; and his church family and many friends.  Serving as pallbearers will be David Chance, Gary Gay, Dennis Holley, Jimmy Ivey, Willie Jones Jr., Johnny Jordan, Douglas Norton and Steve Perdue.  Honorary pallbearers will be members of the American Legion Post 229.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Legion Post 229, P.O. Box 29, Wrens GA 30833.

Mr. John Thomas “Tommy” McGahee

John Thomas “Tommy” McGahee, 73,  entered into his eternal rest Thursday morning,  Dec. 21, 2017. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, at Your Hope Church in Matthews with Rev. Joe Walden officiating. Interment will follow in the McGahee family plot at Waldens UMC Cemetery in Avera.
One of five children born to the late Mary Davis McGahee and the late John Oliver McGahee, Tommy was a lifelong resident of Jefferson County and attended school in Avera. He quit school, later obtaining his GED, in order to work on the farm. Tommy was a jack of all trades—farming, doing construction work including electrical, laying carpet, etc, driving a gas truck and working at several companies before going into public safety. He was instrumental in bringing ambulance service to Wrens and worked as an EMT and dispatcher. He also served as a Wrens police officer; as well as being a volunteer fireman, retiring with 26 years of service, for Stapleton and Wrens. He was also a bus driver for 10 years for the Jefferson County Board of Education, after which he had his own lawn care service company until his health declined and he could no longer work. He could often be found tinkering on various equipment, especially the tractor, which he loved to “fix” and drive. Tommy enjoyed being outside, and was often working in his vegetable garden—his pride and joy; and of late, riding around watching farmers bale hay and/or clear land. He served his Lord and Savior at Your Hope Church, and volunteered his time at the Mt. Moriah Youth Camp—he loved working with the kids there.  He was always listening to gospel music: his favorite group was the Southern Song Masters.  Tommy enjoyed being around people and never met a stranger, always joking and telling “back-in-the-day” stories. Above all else, he loved his family—his grandchildren stole his heart.  His favorite time of the year was Thanksgiving and Christmas since this was the time when all the family got together—for Tommy, it was all about the fellowship.  Death has left a void that no one can fill, but his love has left memories that no one can steal.
Tommy is also preceded in death by his precious son, Jeffery Thomas McGahee; and brother, Jimmy Carrol McGahee. Those left to cherish his memory include his three children, Tracie M. Jones, Cliff McGahee (Carli) and Josh McGahee (Ana); three siblings, Frank McGahee (Mary), Mary Ann Reese (Clarence) and Linda Channel (Kenneth); nine grandchildren, Kyle Jones (Breana), Jeremy Jones, Amanda Jones Clark, Carson Hayes, Tessa Hayes, Abigail McGahee, Natalia McDaniel, Alexander McGahee and Mary McGahee; three great grandchildren, Mikayla Clark, Shaun Clark and Allyanna Clark; nieces, nephews, cousins, church family and many friends. Pallbearers will be Jeremy Jones, Kyle Jones, Willie Lacey, Curt McGahee, William Schmidt and Barrow Walden.  Serving as honorary pallbearers will be retired and active members of the Wrens and Stapleton Fire Departments.

Lena Norris Braswell, 89, loving wife of the late Adam “Hoyt” Braswell, entered into her eternal rest Saturday evening, Dec. 30, 2017, at Augusta University Medical Center. Funeral services will be held in the James Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 3, 2018 with Reverend Chad Watkins officiating. Interment will follow in the Wrens Memorial Cemetery.
The eldest of four children born to the late Millie Ellis Norris and the late Alfred Norris, Lena was a lifelong resident of Wrens, where she was a member of Wrens United Methodist Church. After graduating from Wrens High School in 1946, she began working with Southern Bell in Augusta and Wrens as a telephone operator. She later owned and operated Braswell’s Service Station for many years. Having married a farmer, Lena loved the land and was proficient in the use of all farm equipment. A challenge to grow gourds for her aunt turned into a business as gourds on the vine near her home drew interest from travelers on U.S. Highway 1. She began posting in the Georgia’s Farmers & Consumers Market Bulletin, and The Gourd Farm quickly became a go-to gourd supplier in the southeast, making Wrens “the Gourd Capital of the World”.  Growing up in the depression era, Lena was a hard-worker and well-respected business woman.  Her sometimes hard, no-nonsense exterior housed a heart of gold. She was a lady who said what she meant, and meant what she said. Wrens has lost an icon of the community whose memory will forever be in our hearts.
Lena is also preceded in death by her siblings, John Norris, Pete Norris and Sara Norris Wooten. Survivors include her children, Linda Braswell Torpy (John) and Clinton Braswell; her two grandchildren, Ashlee Torpy and John Torpy III (Kelli); two great grandchildren, Tate Torpy and Abi Torpy; special friend, Marjorie “Lillie Ree” Harris; nieces, nephews and many friends.  Serving as pallbearers will be Joe Braswell, Robert Lane, Mike McGahee, Roger Phillips, James Snipes and John Torpy III.

During this time, she and her sisters would take trips to sites all along the eastern seaboard. She quit school as a teenager, working on the family farm and helping her mother with the household upkeep. She met and married the love of her life—a farmer—just before her 21st birthday. Growing up during the depression, Elsie was no stranger to hard work and was always busy providing a safe, comfortable home for her family. She loved to garden, canning and freezing vegetables, and was a fantastic cook and baker. She was famous for her homemade biscuits which she made for every meal.  She enjoyed the family camping trips and traveling. Elsie loved her Lord and Savior, serving Him as a member of Wrens United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and was very active until her health decline. Dedicating her life to God, she read her Bible daily—she could be found every morning at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee reading her Bible and praying.  These quiet times were essential to her.  Her work ethic, selfless sacrifice, devotion, integrity, faithfulness and loving spirit are exemplary of the Proverbs 31 woman.  She had an unconditional love for her family and was most content in their presence. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren stole her heart and provided great joy. Memories of this woman of faith sustain us through this time of grief, knowing that we will one day be reunited with her in our eternal home.
Elsie is also preceded in death by her granddaughter, Connie Ann Tidwell; and all nine of her siblings, Floyd, Florence, Albert, Hattie, Freddie, Milo, Eugene, Alma and Lee. Survivors include her two daughters, Ann Usry Tidwell of Smyra, and Ellen Usry Bailey of Marietta; three grandchildren, Misty Tidwell Gardner (Billy), Rodney Bailey (Sherry) and D. D. Bailey (Julie); five great grandchildren, Justin Gardner, Russell Gardner, Cam Bailey, Wyatt Bailey and Marti Ann Bailey; one great-great grandson, Grayson Wyatt Gardner; and many nieces and nephews. Serving as pallbearers will be Cam Bailey, D. D. Bailey, Rodney Bailey, Wyatt Bailey, Billy Gardner and Justin Gardner.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorial contributions be made to her beloved church—Wrens United Methodist Church, 202 Russell Street, Wrens GA 30833.
