Mrs. L. Mae Byrum

Mrs. L. Mae Byrum of Gibson entered into rest on Thursday, Aug. 20, 2015.

Mrs. Byrum was born in Tarant City, Ala., but always called Augusta her home. Mrs. Byrum reached the level of master artisan in the field of cosmetology. She owned Salon 500, downtown Augusta, and retired at the age of 70 from J.B. Whites Salon in Regency Mall. She volunteered at the Uptown VA Hospital, nursing homes and church committees.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Thomas Poteet and Son Chapel, with Pastor Elizabeth Ackerman and Fr. Michael Roverse officiating. Interment followed at Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Gibson, at 1 p.m.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Rosetta Armstrong; father, John McGowan; 11 brothers; one sister; and husbands, Emmett Angelo Loudis and John Marshall Byrum.

Survivors include her son, Emmett A Loudis Jr. of Gibson; daughters, Mary Byrum Cioffi (Joseph) of Grovetown, and Theresa Phoenix of Florida; niece, Mavis Weems; and great-niece, Susan Weems (Joe).

Mr. William Cheely Sr.

Mr. William Cheely Sr. of Tennille entered into rest on Aug. 12, 2015, at his residence.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Aug. 22, 2015, at 11 a.m. at New Light Christian Fellowship, Warthen, with Rev. Louise Neal officiating. Interment was held in Sandy Grove Church Cemetery, Mitchell.

Survivors include his daughters, Sheryl (Arthur) Folsom, Tennille, and Beverly (Robert) Hawkins, Hawkinsville; sons, William (Shanla) Cheely and Walter (Alicia) Cheely, both of Sandersville; sisters, Annie Hayes, Watauga, Texas, Annette Cumming, Rochester, N.Y., and Lucille Hirt, Milwaukee, Wis.; brothers, Robert Cheely, Macon,  and Willie A. Cheely, Augusta; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Mr. Jimmy L. Heath Sr.

Mr. Jimmy L. Heath Sr. of Louisville entered into rest on Saturday, Aug. 22, 2015, at the VA Medical Center, Augusta.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Aug. 27, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Pierce Grove Missionary Baptist Church and Cemetery, Louisville.

Mr. Heath was a native of Jefferson County. He was born to the late Lafayette Heath and Leva Atkinson Heath in Louisville. He was married to the late Mary Elease Jordan Heath. At an early age, he joined Pierce Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a Trustee. He retired from Thermo King Incorporation as a welder.  

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elease Jordan Heath; son, Jimmy Heath Jr.; and grandson, Keith Palmer.

Survivors include sister, Vivian Jones of Rochester, N.Y.; children, Armadean (Joe) Sello, Kenneth Heath Sr. and Robbie Heath, all of Louisville; granddaughter raised as a daughter, Tanisha (Adam) Holmes of Dublin; grandchildren, Marcus Heath, Kenneth Heath Jr., Jacountress Martin, Laqueshia Heath and Marquis Heath, all of Louisville, Artonia Heath of Milledgeville, and Torri (Carlos) Martin-Thompson of Richmond, Va.; daughter-in-law, Mary Heath of Louisville; aunt, Essie Mae Stephens of New York; brothers-in-law, Leroy (Carrie) Jordan and Eddie Jordan, both of Wrens; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Jordan, Freddie Lee Jordan and Helen Jordan, all of Wrens; aunt-in-law, Evelyn Burnett, Philadelphia, Pa.; 18 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Eugene Lewis

Mr. Eugene Lewis of Louisville entered into rest on Saturday, Aug. 22, 2015, at Doctors Hospital, Augusta.

Mr. Eugene Lewis was a native of Jefferson County. He was born to the late Mary Lue Lewis Jordan and Willie Smith in Louisville. He was married to the late Freddie Bell Walden Lewis. He attended the Jefferson County School System and was affiliated with Canaan Galilee Missionary Baptist Church. He was employed with the Georgia Forestry Commission, Louisville Oil Mill, Thermo King Incorporation, and was a truck driver and self-employed mechanic.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Aug. 28, 2015, at 2 p.m. at James and Virginia Davis Memorial Chapel, Louisville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Willie C. Jordan; and siblings, Freddie Lewis and Charlie Lewis.

Mr. Samuel “Buck” Powell

Mr. Samuel “Buck” Powell, 76, of Louisville entered into rest on Monday, Aug. 17, 2015, at his residence.
A native of Jefferson County, Mr. Powell was a son of the late Hubert Powell and Margie Newman Powell. He was employed with Flavorich Milk as a truck driver for 40 years before his retirement.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 20, 2015, at Taylor Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Jonathan Witt officiating. Burial followed in Jefferson Memorial Gardens.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Edward Powell; and son, Tim Powell.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Linda Powell of Louisville; sons, Eric (Debbie) Powell of Waynesboro, and Steve (Carol) Powell of Adrian; daughters, Tamara (Aaron) Horton of Reidsville, and Roseann (Brandon) James of Wrens; brothers, Leroy Powell of Hephzibah, and James Powell of Martinez; grandchildren, Hailey and Erin Horton, Colton and Cash James, Shannon and Courtney Powell, and Brandy and Paula Powell; and many nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Andy Horton, Gene Powell, Bennett Howard, Eugene Powell, Bert Brooks and Seth Yawn.

Mr. Barry E. Rosier

Mr. Barry E. Rosier, 66, of Jackson, S.C., entered into rest on Aug. 16, 2015.

Mr. Rosier was a native of Missouri, having made Jackson, S.C., his home for the past 50 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of Vietnam and was a boilermaker with Local 26, Savannah, for more than 40 years. He was a member of the NRA, Horse Creek Bottle Club of North Augusta, S.C., and the Civil War Preservation Trust Club.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Aug. 20, 2015, at 10 a.m. at Posey Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Tom Kalliokoski officiating. Interment was held on Rosier Plantation with Veterans honors.

Survivors include his daughters, Angelique Smith (Jody), Jackson, S.C., Alexis Downs (Chad), Gibson, and Savannah Rosier, Martinez; brother, Stephen Rosier, Beech Island, S.C.; sister, Nancy Samples, Lakemont; grandchildren, Hayleigh Downs, Kayla Rosier, Karissa Jones, Carson Downs and Talon Downs; great-grandchildren, Brady Williford, Anthony Eugene Woods and Brantley Jennings.

Mr. John Willie Samples

Mr. John Willie Samples of Davisboro entered into rest on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2015, at his residence.

Mr. Samples was a native of Washington County. He was born to the late Willie Freddie Samples and Flora Mae Poole Samples in Riddleville. He was married to the late Francine Gamble Sample. He attended Camp Spring Missionary Baptist Church. He was employed with Willie Hartley Farm’s as a farmer.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Aug. 22, 2015, at 3 p.m. at Camp Spring Missionary Baptist Church, Sandersville. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his children, Antonio (Erica) Jordan, Jacksonville, N.C., and Johntavious Samples, Davisboro; step-children, Vince Gamble, Milledgeville, and Christopher (Sandra) Gamble, South Carolina; brother, Freddie Lee Samples, Davisboro; sister, Flora Ann Samples, Davisboro; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Betty G. and Henry Heggs, Davisboro; two grandchildren; aunts and uncles, Joyce (Marion) Dixon, Ulyssess (Janice) Poole and Jimmy Lee Poole, all of Riddleville, and Marion Poole, Savannah; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Mr. Charlie M. “Bean” Bractley

Funeral services for Mr. Charlie M. “Bean” Bractley were held on Sunday, Aug. 30, 2015, at 2:30 p.m. at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, Louisville, with Rev. Isaac Culberth officiating. Interment was in Spring Bethel Society Cemetery.

Mr. Bractley was born on Jan. 1, 1942, to the late Johnnie Lee Bractley and Dennie C. Patterson. He married Pauline Adams on Aug. 18, 1962. At an early age, he joined and was baptized at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church. Mr. Bractley worked as a cement truck driver for Smith-Sheppard, Louisville, but his trade was a butcher and he worked for many years for Louisville Abattoir (Butcher Pen). He was also employed at Van Trans for several years. Prior to his failing health, Mr. Bractley worked many years building houses and as a handy man for the late Broadus Wren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Johnnie Bractley, Dennie Carr, Johnnie Mae Baldwin, Eugene Hinkins, Lamar Gross, Fletcher Walden, Freddie Walden, Freddie Bell Lewis and Lee Edward Walden.

Mrs. Virginia Edwards Buxton

Mrs. Virginia Edwards Buxton, 83, of Sardis entered into rest on Friday, Aug. 28, 2015, at University Hospital, Augusta, following a sudden illness.

Mrs. Buxton was born in Egypt, Effingham County, to the late Eula Bell Mills and Oswald Daniel Edwards Sr. She and her husband, the late James F. Buxton, owned and operated Buxton’s Supermarket, Sardis, for 50 years before retiring. She was a member of Sardis United Methodist Church and the Women’s Missionary Group.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Aug. 31, 2015, at 2 p.m. at Sardis United Methodist Church, with Rev. Steve Sirmons, Rev. Dr. Karen R. Zeigler and Rev. Janet Odegaard officiating. Burial was in St. Marks Cemetery, Sardis.

Survivors include her daughter, Cile B. (Todd) Campbell of Sardis; son, Otis A. McCoy (Patty Nyetrae) of Avera; brother, William A. Edwards of Sylvania; grandchildren, Macy M. Kitchens, Flynt Campbell and Brynt Campbell; great-grandchildren, Gaven Kitchens, Madalyn Kitchens, Gracie Campbell, Kyncoln Campbell, Jay Campbell, Grayson Hillis and Emerie Hillis; friends, Mack Mobley and Sally Mobley; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Robert “Scott” Gay Jr.

Mr. Robert “Scott” Gay Jr., 78, of Waynesboro entered into rest on Aug. 27, 2015, while vacationing with his family in Gatlinburg, Tenn.

Mr. Gay was a native and longtime resident of Burke County. Shortly after his marriage to Sylvia, they moved to Savannah for two years while Mr. Gay worked for the railroad. Upon returning to Waynesboro, he was employed with Perfection Products, where he served as vice president of sales. He was also employed with M&S Chemical Company, before founding and co-owning S&S Distributing in 1988 and retiring in 2002. Mr. Gay was a member of the First Baptist Church of Waynesboro and was a 50 year-plus member with perfect attendance of Waynesboro Rotary Club and held the position of Membership Chair for many years and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member and past-president of Waynesboro Country Club.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2015, at DeLoach-McKerley-Prescott Chapel, with the Dr. G. Al Wright and Rev. Jerry Sharpe officiating. Burial followed in Ways Baptist Church Cemetery, Stellaville.

He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 50 years, Sylvia Leard Gay; and sister, Billie Brabham.

Survivors include his sons, Scott M. Gay (Tammy) and Paul A. Gay, both of Waynesboro; sister, Martha Cooper of Waynesboro; companion and friend, Martha DeLaigle of Brooklet; grandchildren, Bobby and Rusty Gay and Aubrey Lynn and Ashlee Elizabeth Gay; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Bobby Gay, Chip Barefield, John McDonald, Jimmy Jones, Lee Webster, Rusty Gay and Bud North.

Mrs. Marcia Purser Jones

Mrs. Marcia Purser Jones, 93, of Louisville entered into rest on Thursday, Aug. 27, 2015, at University Hospital, Augusta.

Mrs. Jones, a native of Cochran, had lived in Louisville for many years. She was born to the late John P. and Lennie Bea Jones Purser. She was a homemaker and member of Louisville United Methodist Church and the Eastern Star. Along with her husband, Reese, Mrs. Jones owned and operated the Jones Shell Services Station, the Jones Burger and the Jones Motel in Louisville for many years.

A private service was held on Saturday, Aug. 29, 2015. Burial was in Louisville City Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Reese Griffin Jones Sr.; siblings, Louise Campbell, Marie Etheridge, Ralph Purser, Johnny Purser and Frances Cochran; and a son-in-law, Thomas Frost II.

Survivors include her children, Reese (Kay) Jones Jr. of Waynesboro, Pam (Olin) Cannon of Martinez, and Kim Frost of Bartow; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Gaynell W. Kitchens

Mrs. Gaynell W. Kitchens of Warrenville, S.C., entered into rest on Aug. 24, 2015, at her residence.

Mrs. Kitchens retired from Riverside Mill, Augusta. She was born in Aiken County and lived there all of her life.

Graveside services were held on Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2015, at 1 p.m. at Bethel United Methodist Churchyard, Gibson, with Pastor Ray Reynolds officiating.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Kitchens Sr.; and son, Bobby Kitchens.

Survivors include her sons, Larry Kitchens (Anna Laura) and Leroy Kitchens Jr.; brother, Wade Widener; and grandchildren, James Kitchens Jr. (Teresa), Linda K. Mickley (Ed) and Scott Kitchens.

Mrs. Helen L. Miller

Mrs. Helen L. Miller, 96, of Forsyth County entered into rest on Saturday, Aug. 22, 2015.

Graveside services were held on Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2015, at 4 p.m. at Sawnee View Gardens, with Rev. Troy Milford and Rev. Tony Reed officiating.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ollis Rintz Miller Sr.

Survivors include her children, Dr. Ollis Rintz “Butch” (Susan) Miller Jr. of Prescott, Ariz., Bobby R. (Clarissa) Miller of Gainesville; grandchildren, Todd Miller, Erika Miller, Douglas Miller, Donny (Lisa) Miller, Karen (Alan) Stubblefield, Sharon (Kevin) Helmer and Christopher (Leah) Williams; and five great-grandchildren.

Mr. Richard Vanoy Sellars

Mr. Richard Vanoy Sellars, 73, of Deepstep entered into rest on Friday, Aug. 28, 2015, at his residence following an extended illness. 

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 5, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Deepstep United Methodist Church, with Rev. Wallace Smith and Rev. Jason McClendon officiating. 

Mr. Sellars was a native and lifelong resident of Washington County, born to the late William Kincher Sellars and the late Annie Dell West Sellars. He was a retired shipper with J.P. Stephens Company. He attended Louisville Church of the Nazarene. 

Survivors are his companion, Rachel Carol Brewer of Deepstep; son, Michael Sellars of New Mexico; sister, Joan Sellars Smith of Fayetteville; brother, William “Billy” Sellars of Sandersville; extended family, Carol B. Veal (Jeff) of Deepstep, Rebecca Hannah of Jacksonville, Ron Boulineau (Rosanna) of Tennille, Jason Boulineau (Michelle) of Sandersville, and Rhonda Sherrod (Todd) of Twin City; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Jacquelyn Gayle Talbott

Mrs. Jacquelyn Gayle Talbott, 83, of Winder entered into rest on Aug. 27, 2015.

A native of Detroit, Mich., Mrs. Talbott was a daughter of the late Jack and Constance Horgan Spranklin.  She met her husband, Roger Talbott, while volunteering with the USO in San Diego, Calif. Mrs. Talbott owned and operated The Corner Book Store in Winder for 15 years.

A graveside service was held on Saturday, Aug. 29, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery, with Stephen Talbott officiating.

Survivors include her daughter, Kathryn (Jerry) Ash of Winder; son, Stephen (Linda) Talbott of Louisville; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Katherleen H. Cheely

Mrs. Katherleen H. Cheely, 90, of Mitchell entered into rest on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2015.

Mrs. Cheely was born in Sparta to the late Otis Chaffie Hinsley and the late Lillie Myrtle Babb Hinsley. She was a homemaker and a member of Bethel Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 6, 2015, at Bethel Baptist Church, Hancock County, with Rev. Randy Dunaway officiating. Interment followed in the Dunn Family Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin Earl Cheely.

Survivors include her daughters, Peggy Cason (Veazey) of Thomson, and Polly Perkins of Sparta; grandchildren, Shirley Black, Barbara Williams, Bonny Lindsey and James Perkins (Neva); great-grandchildren, Nick Chalker, Dustin Cason (Kathleen), Sam Williams, Jonathon Downs, Brittany Lindsey, Katie Perkins and Harvey Perkins; and great-great-grandchild, Jacob Cason.

Rev. David Oliver “Uncle D.D.” Davis Jr.

Rev. David Oliver “Uncle D.D.” Davis Jr., 69, of Louisville entered into rest on Saturday, Sept. 5, 2015, following a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Celebration of life services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015, at 1:30 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Avera, with Rev. Gene Ghent officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

Rev. Davis was a native of Brunswick, but had lived in Louisville for many years. He was a son of the late David Oliver Davis Sr. and Perritt Leonard Davis. He was a graduate of Wofford College and the Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He worked in the U.S. Postal Service, Louisville, for 22 years, and served as pastor of three area churches, for 35 years, Langston Baptist, Clinton, S.C., Central Baptist, Louisville, and Pleasant Grove Baptist, Avera. Rev. Davis served as moderator of the Hephzibah Baptist Assertion. He also acted in the Bartow Community Theater.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife of 41 years, Cathy Lambert Davis.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria Baughn Davis of Louisville; children, Davy (Melinda) Davis of Greenwood, S.C., Angel (Kevin) Davis Skinner of Gaston, S.C., Matthew (Jennifer) Davis of Greenville, S.C., Trey (Sara) Baughn of Simpsonville, S.C., and Cameron (Margaret) Baughn of Pawleys Island, S.C.; 11 grandchildren, Rebecca (Sean) Davis Holtzclaw, Beth Davis, Noah Skinner, Eli Skinner, Davy Davis, Katie Davis, Reagan Baughn, Caleb Baughn, Jack Baughn and Knyle Davis; brother, David Michael Brown of Cross Anchor, S.C.; and several nieces, nephews and many friends.

Mr. William E. “Bill” Garrett III, 66, of Bartow entered into rest on Monday, Aug. 31, 2015, at Washington County Regional Medical Center following an extended illness. 

Mr. Garrett was a native and lifelong resident of Washington County, the son of the late William E. Garrett Jr. and the late Vivian Lord Garrett. He worked in the kaolin industry beginning with Anglo American Clays and retiring from the J.M. Huber Company in maintenance after 31 years. In retirement, Mr. Garrett worked for the Washington County Machine Shop. He was a member of the Riddleville Baptist Church and was a former Riddleville Volunteer Fireman. Mr. Garrett was an Army veteran, serving during Vietnam. 

Graveside services were held on Friday, Sept. 4, 2015, at 2 p.m. at Riddleville Cemetery, with Rev. Daniel Porter and Rev. Marty Deal officiating. 

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Harrell Garrett of Bartow; children, Scotty E. Garrett (Susan) of Riddleville, Jennifer G. Price (Joel) of East Dublin, and Robert W. Garrett (Jamie) of Davisboro; grandchildren, Justin Garrett, Austin Garrett, Faith Garrett, Trey Garrett, Colton Price and Anna Leigh Price; sister, Kathy G. Smith of Rockledge; and brothers, Monte Garrett (Beverley) and Michael Garrett (Sonya), both of Dublin.

Mrs. Dianna Williams Jackson

Mrs. Dianna Williams Jackson of Bartow entered into rest on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2015, after an auto accident.

Mrs. Jackson was a native of Jefferson County. She was born to Dessie Mae Thomas and the late Albert Williams Sr. On Nov. 11, 2003, she married Kenneth Jackson. She was a member of Faith Memorial CME Church. She was a 1989 graduate of Louisville High School, and later received an associate’s degree in social arts. Mrs. Jackson was employed with Washington State Prison as a corrections officer for 18 years.

Private funeral and burial services were held.

She was preceded in death by her father; and brother, Terry Lee Williams.

Mr. Lester Tennyson, formerly of Louisville, entered into rest on Saturday, Sept. 5, 2015, in Augusta.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015, at 2 p.m. at New Exodus Baptist Church, Hephzibah. Burial will follow at Mt. Pleasant CME Church, Bartow.

Mr. Tennyson was a native of Jefferson County. He was born to the late Tommie Lee Tennyson and Mamie Brown Tennyson in Chatham County. He was married to the Lena Bell Tennyson. He was a member of the New Exodus Baptist Church. Mr. Tennyson received his education in the Jefferson County School System. He served in the U.S. Army and was employed with Arrington Auto Sales.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one son, Sherman Tennyson.

Mrs. Lexie Mural Black Bazemore

Mrs. Lexie Mural Black Bazemore, 90, of Wrens entered into rest on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015, at Gibson Health and Rehab Center, Gibson.

Mrs. Bazemore was one of five children born to the late Annie Vickery Black and the late Ira Otis Black.  She was born and raised in Sardis, where she met her husband, while waitressing at the Sardis Café. After marrying, they continued to live in Sardis until 1966 and then moved to Wrens to open Bazemore Furniture Store, and later opened a bait and tackle shop. She was also a homemaker. Mrs. Bazmore attended Wrens United Methodist Church.

Funeral services were held at James Funeral Home Chapel at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10, 2015, with Rev. Roy White officiating. Interment followed in Wrens Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Lee Thomas Bazemore; son, Leeland Bazemore; and siblings, Ira O. Black Jr., Grady Black and Margie Black.

Survivors include her sons, Gary L. Bazemore (Iris), Glenn H. Bazemore (Carol) and Roger D. Mr. Milton Curtis Brown

Mr. Milton Curtis Brown, 40, of Norwood entered into rest on Sunday, Sept. 6, 2015. 

Mr. Brown was a native of Jacksonville, Fla., but had lived in this area for many years. He worked for Jebco in Warrenton and was a member of Mitchell Full Gospel Church. 

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2015, at Mitchell Full Gospel Church, Mitchell, with Rev. Freddie Penrow officiating. Burial followed in Mitchell Full Gospel Church Cemetery. 

He was preceded in death by his father, Jimmy Davis Brown; and son, Johnathon Donald Brown.

Survivors include his mother, Brenda Fay Bales Brown of Mitchell; and brothers, Jimmy David Brown of McCloud, Okla., and Roderick Brown of Wrens.

Mr. Harold D. Burnette

Mr. Harold D. Burnette, 78, of Woodstock entered into rest on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015, at his home after an extended illness from cancer.

Mr. Burnette was a member of First Baptist Church of Woodstock, where he taught Sunday school for second graders. Mr. Burnette would visit family and friends in Louisville and eat breakfast at Ingles.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Sept. 11, 2015, at Lakeside Funeral Home Chapel, Woodstock. Burial was at Mountain View Park Cemetery, Marietta.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carol and Nellie Burnette.

Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Dolores Gaston Burnette of Louisville; children, Becky Soufast of Alpharetta, Tommy Burnette of Buchanan, Debbie Stewart of Acworth, and Melinda Burnette of Canton.

 

Mr. Russell Levi Callaway

Mr. Russell Levi Callaway, 90, of Avera entered into rest on Friday, Sept. 11, 2015, at Georgia Regents Medical Center.

One of five children born to the late Adell Rimes Callaway and the late Charles Capus Callaway, Mr. Callaway was born in Morriston, Fla., but grew up in Williston, Fla., where he graduated high school. He served in the Army during WWII. While stationed in Florida, he came home with a friend to Avera where he met his wife, the late Agnes Hadden Callaway. They married in 1954 and moved to Augusta, where he worked in the maintenance department at E.I. DuPont for more than 30 years. In 1973, the family moved to Avera, living in his wife’s childhood home. Mr. Callaway was a member at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, where he was a former Deacon. 

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2015, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Avera, with Rev. Doug Veer officiating. Interment, with military honors, followed in the church cemetery. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter, Karen C. Washington; and siblings, Alene Collins, Mary Zetrouer, Leon Callaway and Rubye Irby.

Survivors include his daughter, Kathy C. Moore; grandchildren, Craig W. Moore, Mary Moore and Rusty Washington; great-grandchildren, Craig W. Moore Jr., Courtney M. Moore, Brianna H. Osborne, Kayla L. Osborne, Alee Washington and Rustin Washington; and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Ola Mae Curtis

Mrs. Ola Mae Curtis, 102, of Augusta entered into rest on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015.

Mrs. Ola Mae Curtis was born to the late Plezen and Mattie Whigham on Oct. 16, 1912, in Wadley. She received her formal education from Batts Grove Elementary and Wadley High School in Jefferson County. Upon completion of her secondary education, she enrolled in the Log Cabin Institute. Mrs. Curtis was employed by the Grange Community School, Jefferson County. After marrying her husband, Willie Curtis, they moved to Augusta. Mrs. Curtis joined Live Oak CME Church, Wadley, at an early age. She worked with the Missionary Society, and continued after joining Bethel AME Church upon relocating. She was a member of the Stewardess Board and the Happy Bunch. After the death of her husband, she worked full-time in the family grocery store, Curtis Grocery. She was a member in the Eastern Star.

A celebration of life service was at noon on Monday, Sept. 14, 2015, at Bethel AME Church, Augusta, with Rev. Mark Pierson officiating. Interment was in Southview Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and sons, Willie Curtis and Alvin Curtis.

Mrs. Sue Tannahill Jones Grabiak

Mrs. Sue Tannahill Jones Grabiak, 83, of Sandersville entered into rest on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2015, at Extended Care Facility, Sandersville, following an extended illness.

Mrs. Grabiak was a native of Birmingham, Ala., born to the late David Charles Tannahill and the late Evelyn Lewis Tannahill. She was a graduate of Georgia College, with a degree in art education and social studies. She was a former counselor at Washington State Prison for Women, where she taught a knitting class. She was employed as a sales person for Rawlings Antiques and was a former bookstore owner. Mrs. Grabiak was a former art teacher at Carver Elementary School, Wadley. She was a member of the Sandersville United Methodist Church, the Friendship Fellowship, the Women’s Circle of the Church and the Mamie Tarbutton Circle.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2015, at Sandersville United Methodist Church, with Rev. Dr. Joseph Buck IV officiating. Burial was private.

Survivors include her husband, Antony F. Mrs. Faye A. Hadden, 72, of Stapleton entered into rest on Thursday, Sept. 10, 2015, at Jefferson Hospital.

Mrs. Hadden was a daughter of the late Eugene and Carrie Wren Allen. She was a homemaker and a member of Reedy Creek Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2015, at Reedy Creek Baptist Church, Stapleton, with Dr. Gary Hadden and Rev. John Jenkins officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Murray Eulen Hadden Sr.

Mr. Glynn Edward Johnson

Mr. Glynn Edward Johnson, 78, of Lake Alfred, Fla., formerly of Mitchell, entered into rest on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2015.

Mr. Johnson was born June 11, 1937, in Sandersville to Edward Stephen and Lizzie Ellen Parrish Johnson. He retired after 25 years from Mac Asphalt as a road construction superintendent and also retired after 20 years from W.L. Cobb Construction. He was a member of the Winter Haven Moose Lodge. 

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015, at Mitchell Baptist Church, with Rev. Mary Griswell officiating. Burial followed in Mitchell City Cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his parents; great-granddaughter, Skyler DeJarnette; brother, Everett; and sister, Margaret.

MSgt. Ernest Ted Kardys

MSgt Ernest Ted Kardys, 94, of Savannah entered into rest on Sunday, Aug. 30, 2015, at Bryan County Health and Rehabilitation Center, Richmond Hill.

Mr. Kardys was born on April 12, 1921, in Hartford, Conn., and was a veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam, having served in the U.S. Air Force. He was the last surviving local member of the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum and was retired from Armstrong State University.

Graveside memorial services, honoring both Mr. and Mrs. Kardys, were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015, at Louisville City Cemetery, with military honors.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mavine Hartley Kardys.

Survivors include his daughter, Leah Kaye Barnes of Brunswick; son, Keith Douglas Kardys of Savannah; grandchildren, Melanie Barnes (Tony Ballweg), Hilary Barnes (Michael), Chelsea Barnes (Kyle), and Brian Barnes (April); great-grandchildren, PFC Justice Barnes, Adriene Gaskin, Grady Vaughn, Tarilyn Turner, Christopher Barnes and Tyler Barnes; many nieces and nephews; and neighbor and caregiver, Miriam Walker.

Mr. James Robert Kent

Mr. James Robert Kent, 72, of Sandersville entered into rest on Friday, Sept. 11, 2015, at his residence following an extended illness.

Mr. Kent was a native of Glascock County, born to the late Johnny Clarence Kent and the late Lillie Mae Black Kent. He was a professional carpet installer. Mr. Kent was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Vietnam Conflict and was a member of the American Legion. He attended the Temple of Praise Church.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 14, 2015, at Temple of Praise Church, Sandersville, with Rev. Wallace Smith and Rev. Robbie Kent officiating. Burial was in Washington County Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Mr. Harry Mathis, 86, of Jesup entered into rest on Monday, Aug. 31, 2015, at Wayne Memorial Hospital after an extended illness.

Mr. Mathis, a Glascock County native, had lived in Wayne County most of his adult life and was member of First Baptist Church. He was owner of Maxwell’s Department Store, Jesup, for many years and was a member of Jesup Masonic Lodge No. 112, Jesup Shrine Club and Alee Temple of Savannah.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Bill Harper, Dr. Ron Wilcox and Dr. Mike VonMoss officiating. Interment was in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Betty Rae Fullwood Reese, 61, of Gibson entered into rest on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015, at University Hospital McDuffie, Thomson.

Born in Jacksonville, Fla., Mrs. Reese was one of 12 children born to Elaine Radford Fullwood Young and the late James Lafayette Fullwood. She attended school in Swainsboro and then met her husband at Red McDonald’s Skating Rink, Wrens. After marrying, they moved to Gibson where she was a homemaker.

Funeral services were held at James Funeral Home Chapel at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 11, 2015, with Rev. Jackie Downs officiating. Interment followed in Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens, Thomson.

She was preceded in death by her father; and siblings, Janice Poole, June Fullwood, Jesse Crosby and Curtis Fullwood.

Survivors include her husband of 28 years, John David Reese; mother; children, Kristy Rae Reese and Devin Ray Reese; granddaughter, Annabelle Fourman; siblings, Peggy Peebles (Jimmy), Linda Windom, James Fullwood, Jerry Fullwood (Barbara), Patricia Fullwood, Dianne Newsome and Alvie Akridge (Christie); numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Mrs. Jean V. Scarboro

Mrs. Jean V. Scarboro, 92, of Bartow entered into rest on Thursday, Sept. 10, 2015, at Georgia Regents University, Augusta.

Mrs. Scarboro was born in Pennsylvania to the late George and Ellen Jones Koons and had lived in Bartow for 50 years. She owned and operated a Gas and Grocery Store for many years and was a homemaker. Mrs. Scarboro was a member of the Bartow Baptist Church. 

Graveside services were held on Monday, Sept. 14, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Nails Creek Church Cemetery, with Rev. Michael Williams officiating.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Milton Scarboro.

Survivors include her son, Keith Scarboro (Susan), Bartow; and grandchildren, Heather and Emily Scarboro, Bartow.

Mr. James Garvin “Jim” Walden

Mr. James Garvin “Jim” Walden, 80, of Clayton entered into rest on Monday, Sept. 7, 2015. 

Mr. Walden was born in Waynesboro on July 10, 1935. He was educated in Jefferson County schools and later volunteered for the draft with the U.S. Army, where he served. He attended Georgia Teacher’s College, now known as Georgia Southern University, and later received his master’s degree in education from Florida Atlantic University.

A memorial service was held on Thursday, Sept. 10, 2015, at 2 p.m. at Rabun Gap Presbyterian Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Fares Walden and Elise Collins Walden.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Sandra Davidson Walden; daughters, Katherine Louise Walden Barron and Mary Elizabeth Walden Lassiter (Tal); grandchildren, Cameron Barron (Sarah), Hannah Barron Anderson (Rosson), William Lassiter, Emma Lassiter and Olivia Barron; great-grandson, Bryce Barron; brothers, John Walden (Carey) of Athens, and Collins Walden (Donna) of Stapleton; and nieces and nephews, Jennifer Walden Abbott, Elizabeth Walden, Reese Walden and Bret Walden.

Miss Ruth Adams

Miss Ruth Adams, 99, of Wrens entered into rest on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2015, at Gibson Health and Rehab Center, Gibson.

One of five children born to the late Cora Parker Adams and the late Alvin Hadden Adams, Miss Adams was a lifelong resident of Jefferson County. After graduating from Wrens High School, she attended Georgia State College for Women, Milledgeville, where she earned her BS in elementary education. She taught elementary school in Vidalia until 1958, when her father suffered a stroke and she returned home to manage the family farm. She continued her teaching career at Wrens Elementary School, retiring with 31 years of service. Miss Adams was a member of the Jefferson County Retired Teachers Association. She was baptized in June 1928, and was a member of Wrens Baptist Church. 

Funeral services were held at James Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2015, with Rev. Sean Heggood and Rev. Jack McCorkle officiating. Interment followed in Wrens Memorial Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her parents; all of her siblings, Alvin Harvey Adams, Louise Adams McCarthy, Mary Frances Adams and Infant Boy Adams. 

Survivors include her nieces, Judy Auernheimer and Janis Wilsterman, both of Phoenix, Ariz.; nephew, David “Rocky” Adams (Melody) of Tampa, Fla.; several great-nieces and -nephews; and many cousins.

Mrs. Gladys Baker

Mrs. Gladys Baker, 81, of North Augusta, S.C., entered into rest on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2015.

Mrs. Baker was a native of Louisiana, a former resident of Martinez, having made North Augusta, S.C., her home for the past three years. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She worked on genealogical research.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Sept. 21, 2015, at noon at Posey Funeral Chapel, with Bishop Jonathon Smith presiding. Interment followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn A. “Gabby” Baker.

Miss Brown was born June 23, 1939, in Jefferson County to the late Ozzie and Julia Mae Blair-Stone.

Mr. Anthony Eugene “Tony” Crunkleton

Mr. Anthony Eugene “Tony” Crunkleton, 50, of Toccoa entered into rest on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2015, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

A son of the late Billy and Dorothy Jean “Dot” Loudermilk Crunkleton, Mr. Crunkleton was born on March 8, 1965, in Swainsboro, having lived in Wadley and Toccoa most of his life. He was a 1983 graduate of Thomas Jefferson Academy. Mr. Crunkleton was a self-employed diesel mechanic. He was of the Baptist faith.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Hillcrest Chapel of Acree-Davis Funeral Home, with Rev. Paul Jameson and Rev. Michael Pless officiating. Interment followed at Stephens Memorial Gardens.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Deborah Crunkleton Arnold Eatherly.

Mrs. Mary G. “Kid” Gamble of Wadley entered into rest on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2015, at Jefferson Hospital, Louisville.

Mrs. Gamble was a native of Jefferson County, born to the late Joseph Houston and Mattie Lou Grant, and was reared by Mary Gordon. She was married to the late Deacon J.B. Gamble Sr. She was a member of the Limestone Missionary Baptist Church and was a homemaker.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2015, at noon at Limestone Missionary Baptist Church, Sandersville, with Rev. Johnny R. Sampson as eulogist. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and siblings, Rodenia Grant, Eula B. Thompson, Tom Grant, Robert Gordon, Lonnie Gordon and Willie Gordon.

Mr. Charles “Bo” Dean Isaac

Mr. Charles “Bo” Dean Isaac, 58, of Davisboro entered into rest on Friday, Sept. 18, 2015, at Sparta Health and Rehabilitation Center.

One of eight children born to the late Mary Schmidt Isaac and the late Paul Isaac, Mr. Isaac grew up in Davisboro on the family’s dairy farm. He was a welder and a heavy equipment operator.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2015, at Pinecrest Mennonite Church.   Interment followed in the church cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Jewel Isaac.

Mrs. Melvis Williams Johnson

Mrs. Melvis Williams Johnson, 84, of Avera entered into rest on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2015, at Gibson Health and Rehabilitation Center, Gibson.  

One of nine children born to the late Lula Hardin Williams and the late Lunzy Williams, Mrs. Johnson was born and raised in Avera. She married and moved to Augusta, where she made her home until her health declined, moving in with her nephew in Avera and later to Gibson Health and Rehabilitation Center, Gibson. She earned an associate’s degree and was a personal home health care provider and a homemaker. She attended Sherwood Baptist Church until she was no longer able.

Funeral services were held at James Funeral Home Chapel at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2015, with Rev. Nathan Adams and Rev. Dwight DeNegly officiating. Interment followed in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Avera.

Mr. Allen Fr. Wren, 88, of Augusta entered into rest on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2015.

Mr. Wren was born in Glascock County and attended Warrenton High School. He was a member of Augusta Old Line Primitive Baptist Church and a former deacon. Mr. Wren served three years in the U.S. National Guard. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was the owner and operator of Allen Wren TV Repair Service for 44 years.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at Augusta Old Line Primitive Baptist Church, with Elder Dwayne Hooven officiating. Burial followed at Bellevue Memorial Gardens.

He was preceded in death by his son, Allen Joe Wren; and brother, Euell Wren.

Mrs. Bessie Mills McCall Broadnax

Mrs. Bessie Mills McCall Broadnax, 88, of Mitchell entered into rest on Friday, Sept. 25, 2015, at Gibson Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Broadnax was a native of Knox, Ky., but had lived in Mitchell for many years. She was a daughter of the late John and Lily Stewart Mills. Mrs. Broadnax was a homemaker and a member of Emmanuel Holiness Church.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 17, 2015, at Taylor Funeral Home, with Rev. Lonnie McCall and Rev. Jacky Downs officiating. Burial followed in Mineral Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Nellie Rae Drayton Hall, 69, of Wrens entered into rest on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2015, at Jefferson Hospital, Louisville. 

Mrs. Hall was born on March 12, 1946, to the Late Willie James (Mary Willie Smith) Drayton. She was born in Louisville and raised in Wrens. She attended the Jefferson County School System. Mrs. Hall worked for many years at Fort Gordon as a cook and then as a miner operator at J.M. Huber Corporation, Wrens, and was also a homemaker.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Sept. 21, 2015, at 1 p.m. at Wrens Chapel AME Church, with Rev. Dr. Cassandra Hill presiding and Rev. Ella Samuels as eulogist. Interment was in Wrens Memorial Cemetery. 

She was preceded in death by her son, Johnnie A. Hall Jr.; and siblings, Charles Drayton Sr., Eddie Drayton Sr., Shirley Ann Leigh and Raymond Hannah.

Mrs. Alma Hutchins McTier

Mrs. Alma Hutchins McTier, 91, of Phoenix, Ariz., entered into rest on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2015, at her grandson’s home in Phoenix, Ariz.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 10, in Thomson First Baptist Church Chapel. Burial will follow in Westview Cemetery, Thomson.

Mrs. McTier was born in Louisville and lived in Wadley until age 19, when she and her new husband moved to Thomson. She was a member of Thomson First Baptist Church. She moved to Phoenix, Ariz., in 2009.

A memorial service was held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2015, at Hansen Desert Hills Chapel, Scottsdale, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her husband, O.W. McTier.

Survivors include her daughters, Gail Mihaylo (Charles) Mihaylo of Phoenix, Ariz., and Jane Fordham (Wayne) Fordham of Lynn Haven, Fla.; grandchildren, Christopher Mihaylo, Joshua Mihaylo, Tamryn Hynes, Zachary Fordham and Casi Fordham; and nine great-grandchildren.

Mr. Morris Clifford “M.C.” Little

Mr. Morris Clifford “M.C.” Little, 97, of Nicholson entered into rest on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2015.

Mr. Little was born in Wrens in 1918 to the late Clifford and Mary Smith Little. He graduated from Walker Baptist Boarding School in 1937, and continued his studies at Savannah State, graduating number three in his class in 1941 with a B.S. degree in agricultural science. On Dec. 18, 1953, he earned a master’s of science degree from Iowa State College. He married the former late Josie Gresham. They had two children, Perry and Jerome. Upon graduation, he moved to Wadley and taught school for several years. He moved to Monroe, where he was employed as a county extension agent for the University of Georgia’s Agricultural Extension Service. He was promoted at UGA to associate professor of agricultural science, and retired from the position in 1974. He also worked at Grandview Nursing Home and for the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, where he was employed as the first African-American bailiff. At the age of 80, he officially retired. He gave many years community service in various organizations and was a member of Sardis Presbyterian. He served as an elder, treasurer, superintendent of Sunday school, Sunday school teacher, session member and co-chair of the 100 Year Celebration.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2015, at Bernstein Funeral Home, Athens, at 11 a.m., with Pastor Cheryl Hargrove Barnes officiating and Rev. R.E. Cooper as eulogist. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and sisters, Etta Frances, Altia “Ann” and Corine.

Mrs. Muns was born in Glascock County to the late Carl Cooper and the late Minnie Copeland Cooper. She lived in Thomson for many years and was a homemaker.

Rev. Bridges was born in Glascock County to the late Ed Bridges and the late Lucy Price Bridges. He was a retired Church of God minister and a member of the Kendall Heights Church of God. Rev. Bridges was a U.S. Army veteran serving in Korea where he earned three battle stars. 

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Kendall Heights Church of God, with Rev. Bobby Williford officiating. Burial was in Brownwood Cemetery, Sandersville. 
Survivors include his wife, Willie Bell Smith Bridges of Tennille; children, James Edward Bridges Jr. (Frances) of Ivey, Douglas Eugene Bridges (Lynn) of Harrison, and Elaine B. Denton of Tennille; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and sister, Dorothy B. Asbell (Leonard) of Valdosta.

Miss Victoria “Vicki” Bynes

Miss Victoria “Vicki” Bynes, formerly of Louisville, entered into rest on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2015, at Aiken Regional Medical Center, Aiken, S.C.

Miss Bynes was a native of Jefferson County, born to Essie Mae Washington Thompson and the late Nelson Bynes. At an early age, she joined Woodlawn Missionary Baptist Church. Miss Bynes attended the Jefferson County Public School System.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2015, at 1 p.m. at James and Virginia Davis Memorial Chapel, Louisville, with Rev. Charles Washington as eulogist. Burial followed in Spring Bethel Benevolent Society Cemetery, Louisville.

Mr. Billy “Bugger” Denton

Mr. Billy “Bugger” Denton, 77, of Tennille entered into rest on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2015, at his residence.

Mr. Denton was a native of Glascock County, born to the late Willie Denton and the late Sanka Johnson Denton. Mr. Denton was a retired well digger for Sandersville Well Company. He was a former employee of the Washington Manufacturing Company and the Georgia Department of Transportation. 

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2, 2015, at May and Smith Funeral Home Chapel, Sandersville. Burial was in Zeta Cemetery. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Faye Ann Denton and Eloise Snider; and brother, Allen Denton.

Mr. James Houston Evans

Mr. James Houston Evans, 24, of Thomson entered into rest on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2015, in Matthews.

Mr. Evans was a native of Richmond County, but had lived in Thomson for several years. He was a laborer, and attended Fort Creek Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2015, at Curtis Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Jim Martin officiating. Burial followed in Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include his father, Houston Evans, Thomson; mother, Penny Jordan Evans, Grovetown; sister, Kristen Evans, Grovetown; brother, Jeremy Evans, Matthews; and niece, Lillian Evans.

Colonel (Ret.) Carter E. Hudson

Colonel (Retired) Carter E. Hudson, 78, of Augusta entered into rest on Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2015.

Mr. Hudson was born in Cullman, Ala. He attended school at Jones Chapel and graduated from West Point High School in 1955, Cullman County, Ala. He attended St. Bernard College and Howard College (now Samford University) and earned a bachelor’s degree in religion. In 1965, he received a degree in theology from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, Texas. He also received a master’s degree in psychology and counseling from Ball State University, Muncie, Ind. Mr. Hudson was ordained to the gospel ministry at Harmony Baptist Church, Cullman County, Ala., in 1958. He was commissioned as an officer into the U.S. Army and served as a chaplain for nine years active duty and continued for an additional 17 years in a reserve capacity. He served one year in Vietnam and three years in Germany. From 1976 to 1980, Mr. Hudson was employed by Roosevelt Warm Springs Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, Warm Springs. He served as staff chaplain at Veterans Administration Hospital, Augusta, from 1980 until his retirement in 1995. After his retirement, he served as pastor of Fellowship Baptist Church, Gibson, for three years. Mr. Hudson was a member of The Hill Baptist Church, Augusta.

Funeral services were held at Cullman Heritage Funeral Home Chapel, Cullman, Ala., on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2015, at 2 p.m., with Rev. Don Ware and Max Carter officiating. Interment followed in New Hope No. 1 Cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ira Hudson and Lela Mae Elmore Hudson; brothers, Lowell Hudson, Dwight Hudson and James Hudson; and sisters, Mertis Reese, Mergie Hudson, Clara Bell and Nellie Davis.

Survivors include his wife, Mary McClain Hudson; daughter, Leah (Cevin) Clay; son, John (Lauren) Hudson; grandchildren, Rachel Clay, Anna Clay and William Hudson; sisters, Opal Williams, Inas (Dewey) Briscoe and Nedra Compton; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Mr. Thomas Hubert Hughes, 67, of North Charleston, S.C., entered into rest on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2015, at his residence.

Mr. Hughes was born on Dec. 24, 1947, in Gibson, son of Ethel Williams Hughes of Gibson and the late Hubert Hughes. He was drafted by the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Oct. 5, 2015, at 3 p.m. at James A. Dyal Funeral Home. Burial followed in the Summerville Cemetery, Summerville, S.C.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Pattie Jo Hughes.

Mr. Ralph Ledger

Mr. Ralph Ledger, 80, of Glenn Dale, Md., entered into rest on Monday, Sept. 28, 2015.

A memorial gathering was held on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2015, at 4 p.m. at Beall Funeral Home, Bowie, Md. Interment will be at a later date in the Arlington National Cemetery.

Mr. Ledger was born in Sumter County on Dec. 2, 1934, to the late Pauline McNeely and Daniel Jackson Ledger. On Aug. 7, 1957, he married the late Diana Lee Willey Ledger.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and sister, Christine McGlamry.

Mr. Jesse H. Lindsey

Mr. Jesse H. Lindsey, 88, of Gibson entered into rest on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2015, at Gibson Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Mr. Lindsay was a native of Washington County, but had lived in Gibson for many years. He was a son of the late Jesse L. and Nancy Kitchens Lindsey. Mr. Lindsey was a heavy equipment operator with Washington County for 23 years before retiring.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2015, at Taylor Funeral Home, Gibson, with Jeremy Kelly officiating. Burial followed in the Zeta Cemetery, Tennille.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Edda Mae Snider Lindsey; brothers, Earl Lindsey, Harold Lindsey and Jimmy Lindsey; and sister, Edna Laton.

Mrs. Linda P. Nichols

Mrs. Linda P. Nichols, 66, of Thomson entered into rest on Monday, Sept. 28, 2015.

Mrs. Nichols was born in Augusta to the late Joseph O. Shelton and the late Ethel Cranford Shelton. She was the 1965-1966 Homecoming Queen of American High School, Karlsruhe, Germany. Mrs. Nichols lived most of her life in Thomson and worked at First National Bank, SunTrust Bank and retired from Citizens Bank. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2, 2015, at Beggs Funeral Home Chapel. Interment was private.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Elaine Dent.

Chief Warrant Officer 4 (Retired) John Taylor Peebles, 75, of Avera entered into rest on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2015, at his residence.

Celebration of life services, with full military honors, will be held at James Funeral Home Chapel at noon on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2015, with Dr. James M. Ford officiating. Mr. Peeble’s wish is that everyone attending the services wears patriotic colors or camo, not suits and ties. In a private ceremony, per his wishes, his cremains will be scattered at sea.

The family will receive friends at James Funeral Home on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2015, at 11 a.m.

Mr. Peebles was born in Titusville, Penn., to the late Eleanor Prather Peebles and the late Taylor Peebles. He joined the U.S. Navy after graduating from Academy High, Erie, Penn. He served during Vietnam, retiring as Chief Warrant Officer 4 with more than 29 years of service. He was plank owner of USS Alywin FF1081, as well as a lifetime member of NCOA. After retirement from the Navy, he worked in various jobs and lived in various parts of the U.S. before settling in Georgia to be close to family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother-in-law, Tom Glass.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Ann Peebles; children, Darlene Nerich (Tom), John J. Peebles (Loretta), Michael P. Peebles (Liana), Harold A. Peebles, Sherry McCormack (Joe) and Michael Cook; siblings, Sissy Glass and Tim Peebles (Kathy); mother of his children, Virginia B. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 5, 2015, at Mt. Zion Congregational Methodist Church Cemetery, with Rev. Bobby Farmer officiating.

Mrs. Gisela Elizabeth Kleinz Williams, 89, of Louisville entered into rest Sunday, Oct. 4, 2015, at Jefferson Hospital, Louisville, following an extended illness.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2015, at Zeta Cemetery, Tennille, with Rev. Scot Nash officiating.

Mrs. Williams was a native of Dilllenbug, Germany, born to the late George Kleinz and the late Elizabeth Wolf Kleinz. She had resided in Louisville for many years. She was a homemaker and member of Louisville United Methodist Church. Mrs. Williams was a volunteer Pink Lady for Jefferson Hospital, a member of the Louisville Garden Club, and did arts and crafts for her church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Wesley Williams.

Survivors include her sister-in-law, Sara Williams Gibson of Louisville; nieces, Anita Hartley of Musella, and Gisela W. Warlies of Germany; nephews, Glenn Hartley of Warner Robins, and Ronnie Gibson of Louisville.

Mr. Robert William Henley Jr.

Mr. Robert William Henley Jr. of Louisville entered into rest on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2015, at University Hospital, Augusta.

Mr. Henley, a native of Claxton, was born to Robert William Henley Sr. and Novella Gay Henley. He moved to Jefferson County in 1961, which has been his home for the last half century. Mr. Henley was a member of St. John Baptist Church, Claxton. Later in life, he became a member of James Temple CME Church, Bartow, now Faith Memorial CME Church. Mr. Henley was educated in the Evans County School System, earning his high school diploma from Evans County Training School, Claxton. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and received a Bronze Service Star Victory Metal, and European African Middle Eastern Campaign Metal. He returned from service and earned a bachelors’ degree from Georgia State College (Savannah State University). He later received a grant to study physics at Georgia Southern College. He also studied at Tuskegee University, Lincoln University and New York College. Mr. Henley retired from the Jefferson County Board of Education, with more than 30 years of service. Following his retirement, he was elected president of the Jefferson County Chapter of the Retired Teachers Association and the Jefferson County Chapter of the Savannah State Alumni Association. He was a member of the Louisville Optimist Club, where he served as secretary and treasurer.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2015, at 1 p.m. at Faith Memorial CME Church, Louisville. Burial followed in Jefferson Memorial Garden, Louisville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, George “Rex” Henley; sister, Gwendolyn Henley Strickland; and first wife, Geneieve Brewton Henley.

Mrs. Bettie Hadden Irby

Mrs. Bettie Hadden Irby of Avera entered into rest on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2015, at Heritage Healthcare of Old Capitol, Louisville. 

One of 10 children born to the late Dora Bell Rabun Hadden and the late Joe M. Hadden, Mrs. Irby was a lifelong resident of Jefferson County and a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. She married the late Buford Irby Sr. and had three sons. She was employed in factories, picking cotton, as a salesclerk and in other areas.

Funeral services were held at James Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2015, with Rev. Jonathan Witt officiating.  Interment followed at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Buford Irby Sr.; grandson, Bradley J. Irby; and siblings, Jessie H. McGahee, Lois H. Leland, Marshall Hadden, John Hadden, Jerry Hadden and Edward Hadden.

Miss Regina Lyatoria Morse

Miss Regina Lyatoria Morse of Wrens entered into rest on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2015.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2015, at 2 p.m. at William Grove Baptist Church, Mitchell, with Pastor Tracy Howard as eulogist and Rev. Yvonne Wallace presiding.

Survivors include her sons, Keanochrissean Morse (Jasmine) Sandersville, Christophere Walker and Kerviante Morse, both of Warrenton, and Jayshawn Morse, Wrens; daughters, Faith Morse, Augusta, Lastarshea Morse, Sylvania, Kenerra Morse, Kenisha Morse and Kenayzah Morse, all of Thomson, and Jakiah Morse, Wrens; three granddaughters; one grandson; sister, Jowanda Cheely Fishmon, Augusta; brother, Carl Pinkston (Ida Mae) Sandersville; and friend, Jeffrey Burley, Wrens.

Mr. James “Jim” Atkinson Prescott Jr.

Mr. James “Jim” Atkinson Prescott Jr., 90, of Columbus entered into rest on Oct. 4, 2015, at his residence under the care of his family and caregivers.

Mr. Prescott, son of the late James and Carrie Riley Prescott, was born on May 30, 1925, in Wrens. He grew up on a farm there with his two brothers. After high school, he attended Brewton Parker College, and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy to serve in World War II. He served as an officer on a minesweeper in the Pacific. After the Navy, Mr. Prescott graduated from University of Georgia with a bachelor of science in agriculture and a master’s degree in dairy science at the University of Illinois. On June 9, 1950, received his masters’ and the following to marry Jeanne Runyan from Illinois. The couple have lived in Columbus for 53 years. At this time, Mr. Prescott began his 43 year career at Kinnett Dairies and later became the executive vice president. Through the years, he was involved in all facets of the business and was instrumental in bringing the Baskin-Robbins franchise to the southeast. He was a Christian and member of Rose Hill Baptist Church for 65 years, where he served as Deacon chair, Sunday school director and in other service roles. He was a member of Kiwanis Club, Friday Friars and on the Salvation Army Advisory Board.

Mr. William T. Newsome Sr., 81, of Thomson entered into rest on Monday, Oct. 5, 2015, at his residence.

Mr. Newsome was a native of Jefferson County, but had lived in Thomson for several years. He was retired from DOT in road maintenance with 34 years of service.

The family had a private visitation, and no service at the funeral home.

Survivors include his wife, Pamela Newsome; stepdaughter, Heather Gill (Shawn), Dearing; stepson, Terry Lee Treadway Jr. (Holly), Washington; grandchildren, Haleigh Waller (Justin), Terry Lee Treadway III and Kale Treadway; and friend, David Whitten.

Mr. Richard Wayne Salisbury

Mr. Richard Wayne Salisbury, 65, of Wrens entered into rest on Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2015, at Charlie Norwood V.A. Medical Center, Augusta.

Mr. Salisbury was a native of Eminence, Mo., but had lived in Wrens for many years. He was a son of the late Ernest Dean Salisbury and Lillian Christine Shelton Salisbury. Mr. Salisbury was a U.S. Army veteran and retired from G.L.P. Corporation as a manger and was a member of Friendship Baptist Church, Mitchell.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 9, 2015, at Friendship Baptist Church, Mitchell, with Rev. Rick Carver officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Chip Salisbury.

Survivors include his sons, Steven Salisbury of Gibson, and Chris Salisbury of Hope, Kan.; brother, Dean Salisbury of St. Louis, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Joyce Brown Stone, 69, of Wrens entered into rest on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2015, at Georgia Regents University.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2015, at 3 p.m. at Gethsemane Baptist Church, Avera, with Rev. E.C. Cline officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include her children, Peggy Stone, Clifford Stone and Corey Stone, all of Wrens, and Connie Stone, Augusta; sisters, Helen Knight of Augusta, and Carrie Kelly of Wrens; brothers, Leotis Brown, Roy (Willie) Brown, Dennis Brown, Edward Brown, Jessie Brown and Roger Brown.

Mrs. Sara Frances Norris Paul Phillips Wooten

Mrs. Sara Frances Norris Paul Phillips Wooten of Wrens entered into rest on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2015, at National Healthcare, North Augusta, S.C.

One of four children born to the late Millie Ellis Norris and the late Alfred Norris, Mrs. Wooten was born and raised in Wrens. She married a serviceman in the Army, and then after his passing, married a serviceman in the Navy, Mrs. Wooten lived and traveled all over the U.S. She moved back to Wrens in 2000 after retiring as quality control inspector at Kellogg in order to be near her family and to take care of her sick son, Jimmy. Mrs. Wooten was a Baptist by faith.

Funeral services were held at James Funeral Home Chapel at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 11, 2015, with Rev. Richard Boggan officiating. Interment followed in Wrens Memorial Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Durham Paul, Roy H. Phillips and Ed Wooten; children, Jimmy M. Paul, Rory Phillips and Roy Phillips Jr.; and brothers, John Norris and Pete Norris.

Survivors include her children, Donald E. Paul, Wayne T. Paul (Vicky), Roger H. Phillips, Mala Hand (Earl), Laura McTier, Debbie Haywood, Cindy Holland (Greg) and Teresa Purcell (Jeff); sister, Lena N. Braswell; and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Miss Erica Vining

Miss Erica Vining of Savannah entered into rest on Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2015, in Savannah.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Saint Mark AME Church, Wadley.

Miss Vining was a native of Emanuel County, but later moved to Savannah. She was born to the late Freddie James Fleming and Bertha V. Johnson. At an early age, she joined St. Mark AME Church, Wadley. Miss Vining graduated in 1991 from Swainsboro High School, Swainsboro. She was employed with Carver Elementary School, Wadley, Glendale Nursing Home as a CPA, Wadley, and Serenity Mental Health Facility, Augusta, until her health started to fail her and she could no longer work. Miss Vining attended Swainsboro Tech, where she received her licenses as a nail technician.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Bertha V. Johnson; father, Freddie J. Fleming; and brother, Bennie L. Johnson Sr.

Miss Tobiann Holdaway

Miss Tobiann Holdaway, 46, of Matthews entered into rest on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2015, at her residence after a long, hard-fought battle with cancer.

A celebration of life services will be held at James Funeral Home Chapel at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23, 2015, with Rev. Tommy Anderson officiating. The family will receive friends after the service.

One of three children born to Diane Nadine Fifield Holdaway and the late Earl Wayne Holdaway, Miss Holdaway grew up in Boston, Mass. After graduating high school, she moved to Salisbury where she worked as a store attendant at a campground. In 2003, she moved to Georgia. She worked for eight years at the Jet Store No. 64, Stapleton.

She was preceded in death by her father; and maternal grandparents, Gertrude Butcher Fifield and George Fifield.

Survivors include her mother; children, Marilyn Nadine Holdaway and Mishelle Hope Holdaway; fiancé, Charles Hughes; siblings, Melissa Fikurt (J.R.) and Adam Holdaway (Sarah); and granddaughter, Olivia Ann Lowe.

Mrs. Barbara P. Lampp

Mrs. Barbara P. Lampp, 82, of Gibson entered into rest on Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2015, at Gibson Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Lampp was a native of Jefferson County, but had lived in Gibson for many years. She was a daughter of the late Ralph Powell and Lucy Maye Arrington Powell. She retired after 32 years of service from Stapleton Garment as a machine operator and was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16, 2015, at Bethel United Methodist Church, with Rev. Sam Collins and Rev. Tommy Anderson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Walter Powell.

Survivors include her husband, T.J. Jabor Lampp of Gibson; daughter, Ann Marsh of Gibson; sons, Lewis Lampp and Tom Lampp, both of Gibson; sisters, Susie Brown of Augusta, and Betty Alley of Harlem; brothers, Joe Powell of Harlem, Homer Powell of Blairsville, and John Powell of Augusta; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Jimmy Lord

Mr. Jimmy Lord, 79, of Sandersville entered into rest on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2015, at Washington County Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Lord was a native and lifelong resident of Washington County, the son of the late George Raymond Lord Sr. and the late Orian Catherine Brown Lord. He was a 1954 graduate of Harrison High School and John A. Gupton School of Mortuary Science, Nashville Tenn. Mr. Lord worked as a licensed funeral director and embalmer for 35 years at Mayo-Lord Funeral Home, where he was owner and operator. He owned and operated Jimmy Lord Memorials. Mr. Lord served as coroner of Washington County from 1968 until he was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1976, where he served for 32 years until he retired in 2008. While serving in the House of Representatives, Mr. Lord served on the Agriculture, Natural Resources, Transportation, State Institute Properties committees and was chairman of the Defense and Veterans committee, Insurance Committee and Rules, Operation, Regulated Industries and Health and Ecology committees. He was the owner of Jimmy Lord Insurance from 1997 to 2014. He was a former member of the Sandersville Lions Club and the Hamilton Masonic Lodge.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2015, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Sandersville, with Rev. Lee Lacey, Rev. Mack Jackson, Elder Kenneth Brantley and Rev. Andy Carter officiating. Burial was in Brownwood Cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Fronie McCoy Lord; and sister, Betty L. Smith.

Mrs. May Jean Averett Norton, 73, of Trenton, S.C., entered into rest at her residence on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2015.

Mrs. Norton was born in Zebina, but had been a resident of Aiken County for the past 30 years. She was a retired salad room manager with Western Sizzler Steak House. She was of the Baptist faith.

A graveside service was held at Woodland Baptist Church Cemetery, Matthews, on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2015, at 3 p.m., with Chaplain Dexter Lambert officiating.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carlton Averett and Minnie Ree Gay Averett; sisters, Lois Scott, Betty Cook and Claudine Prather; brothers, Broadus Averett, J.T. Averett and Carlton Averett Jr.; and grandson, Jesse Joe Yassney.

Mr. Benjamin Pollard

Mr. Benjamin Pollard, 83, entered into rest on Oct. 10, 2015.

Mr. Pollard was born Aug. 4, 1932, to the late Timothy B. and Dora Lewis Pollard in Armour, N.C. He later moved to New York City, and met and married Lillian Stroble. They had three children. He retired from the Housing Preservation Department of New York City. After retirement, he did contract work.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and child, Bernie Pollard Sr.

Mrs. Colleen Farrington Price entered into rest on Oct. 12, 2015, while in Hospice Care in Jupiter, Fla.

Mrs. Price was born on Aug. 5, 1936, in in New Mexico. She was raised in Augusta, and had lived in Sandersville, Baton Rouge, La., Savannah, and spent many early years in New York City. 

She was buried in Bartow.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence F. Price; and mother, Rev. Eleanor Scott.

Survivors include her daughter, Diane Lane; granddaughter, Eleanor Lambert; sister, Theresa Scott; and brothers, James Scott (June), and Samuel Scott (Dana).

Mr. Robert Len Quarles, 62, of Lincolnton entered into rest on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2015, at his residence.

Mr. Quarles was the son of the late John Lindsey Quarles and the late Betty Jo Adams. He was a former construction foreman and heavy equipment operator and was presently employed with Wilhoit Gas Company. Mr. Quarles served in the National Guard and attended First Assembly of God.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2015, at First Assembly of God, with Rev. Lanis Lewis and Rev. Terry Bonds officiating. Interment was in St. Paul United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Miss Dorothy Evelyn “Eve” Puckett, 55, entered into rest on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2015.

Miss Puckett was born in Milledgeville, graduated from Louisville High School in 1978 and immediately became affiliated with Georgia College. She received undergraduate degrees in criminal justice, political science and public administration, as well as several master’s degrees from Georgia College, where she currently worked as the Title IX Coordinator and was professionally associated with Georgia College for more than 30 years. She was of the Methodist faith.

A celebration of life ceremony was held at 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16, 2015, at Georgia College Centennial Center. A private graveside service followed at West View Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin Howard and May Smith Puckett; brother, Stan Puckett; and nephew, Chris Puckett.

Miss Willie Ruth Freeman Weston, 66, of Wrens entered into rest on Friday, Oct. 9, 2015, at her residence. 

Born in Wrens, Miss Weston was one of six children born to Annie Ruth Stone Freeman and the late John Willie Freeman, both of Jefferson County. She graduated at Jefferson County High School and attended Albany State. She then began a career in accounting, and later married the late Franklin Howard Weston of Kansas City, Mo. Together they shared one child. Miss Weston then spent the remainder of her life living in Wrens with her life partner, Allen Donald Brinson, originally of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

A celebration of life service was held at James Funeral Home Chapel at noon on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2015, with Rev. Tony Brown officiating.

Survivors include her son, Malcolm Cecil Weston of Brooklyn, N.Y.; siblings, MaryAnne Thomas of Fairfax, Va., Barbara F. Atkins (Billie) of Louisville, John Willie Freeman Jr. (Sharon) of Augusta, Calvin L. Freeman (Karen) of Aldie, Va., and Angela D. Mrs. Annie Ruth Cawley, 81, of Mitchell entered into rest on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2015, at her residence.

A native of Lagrange, Mrs. Cawley was a daughter of the late Loyd Allen Batchlor and Exe Idele Carter Batchlor. Before retiring, she was employed by Warrenton Health and Rehabilitation Center as an LPN. She was a member of Mitchell Full Gospel Church.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2015, at Mitchell City Cemetery, with Rev. Jacky Downs officiating.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Glenn Lamar Cawley; and son, Gary L. Cawley.

Mrs. John Thomas Hattaway Jr.

Mr. John Thomas Hattaway Jr., 90, of Louisville entered into rest on Monday, Oct. 19, 2015, at Charlie Norwood VA Hospital, Augusta.

A native Jefferson County, Mr. Hattaway was a son of the late John T. Hattaway Sr. and Maggie L. Mullin Hattaway. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II. He also served in the Georgia National Guard. Mr. Hattway worked as a maintenance supervisor with J.P. Stevens and retired after many years of service with Union Camp. 

Graveside services, with military honors, were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2015, at Louisville City Cemetery, with Scotty Hattaway officiating.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jerry Hattaway and Wayne Hattaway; and sisters, Margaret Walden, Edith Kelly, Barbara J. Pennington and Mary Lamb.

Survivors include his wife, Gail T. Mr. Andrew Jackson “Andy” Jordan Jr.

Mr. Andrew Jackson “Andy” Jordan Jr., 65, of North Augusta, S.C., entered into rest on Oct. 21, 2015.

Mr. Jordan was a native of Jefferson County, a former resident of Augusta, and had made North Augusta, S.C., his home for the past 10 years. He was the retired owner of Andy Jordan’s Bicycle Warehouse and was a member of the National Bicycle Dealers Association. Mr. Jordan was the organizer of the Lock-to-Lock Bike Ride, a fundraiser for bicycle advocacy. He was a founding member of Save Our Canal and Save the Butt Memorial Bridge, as well as assisting with the creation of the North Augusta Greeneway. He and his wife, Susan, were the founders of the Augusta BMX Racing Track. Mr. Jordan was a professional drummer from 1966 to 1997.

Memorial Services were held on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2015, at 2 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, with Rev. James D. Dennis Jr. officiating.

He was preceded in death by a son, Anthony James Jordan; parents, Andrew Jackson “Jack” Jordan Sr. and Rose Evans Jordan Shank; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Howard and Edith Hensley.

Mr. Lewis was born in Washington County, to the late Burl Neut Lewis and Henaretta Thomas Lewis. He was married to the late Mozelle Lewis. He lived most of his life in Jefferson County, where he joined New Fleming Baptist Church and served as a member of the Trustee Board and as church custodian. He was also a member of the NAACP and was employed at Thermo King, Corp., as a machine operator until his retirement.

Survivors include sons, Robert (Catherine) Lewis of Bartow, Lonnie Lewis Jr. of Louisville, and Danny Lewis and Clifford Lewis, both of Miami, Fla.; daughters, Gladys Waller of Columbus, Lillie Lewis of Miami, Fla., Bernice Lewis of Augusta, and Bonnett McCall of Atlanta; a grandchild he reared as his own, Jerome Lewis of Augusta; 28 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Clifford (Rosa) Brown of Jefferson County; sisters-in-law, Rosa Mae Brown, Viola Bell, Mary Bell and Eunice Devero, all of Jefferson County; cousin, Sarah Smith; and other cousins, family and friends.

Mr. David C. Pinkston

Mr. David C. Pinkston, 55, of Atlanta, formerly of Louisville, entered into rest on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2015.

Mr. Pinkston was a native of Louisville, the son of the late Thomas Pinkston Jr. and Nellie Frances Warren Pinkston. At an early age, he joined Dixon Chapel AME Church, Louisville. He graduated from the Jefferson County School System. Mr. Pinkston enlisted and served in the U.S. Marine Corps and worked several years as an electrician.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2015, Taylor Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in the family lot of Dixon Chapel AME Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Mamie Lee Cunningham Brooks of Miramar, Fla., entered into rest on Oct. 26, 2015, at Memorial Hospital, Pembroke, Fla.

Mrs. Brooks was born in Louisville to the late Willie James Sr. and Margaret McBride Cunningham on Dec. 1, 1916. She was educated in the Jefferson County School System. At an early age, she became a member of Spring Bethel AME Church. In 1951, she moved to Florida and became a member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. In 2013, she was honored for her service as an Usher for 45 years and later honored as Mother of the Church. She was employed by Steinfield Thompson Cannery and as a caretaker for the Schmidt family of Miami, Fla.

Graveside services were held on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Spring Bethel Society Cemetery, Louisville, with Rev. Charles Holloway presiding.

Mr. Pete Farrer, 72, of Rabun Gap, formerly of Toccoa, entered into rest on Monday, Oct. 26, 2015, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center after a battle with cancer.

Born March 8, 1943, in Sandersville, Mr. Farrer was the son of the late Melvin T. and Mary Lee Hartley Farrer. Mr. Farrer was a member of the Toccoa First Baptist Church and was a retired Corporal with the Georgia State Patrol.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29, 2015, at First Baptist Church, with Sam Letson and Andrew Pavliscsak officiating. Flag honors and presentation were provided by the Georgia State Patrol. Entombment followed at Roselane Mausoleum.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Marie Farrer Hutchins.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Penny Bridges Farrer of Rabun Gap; daughters, Tamera (Kenneth) Cash of Toccoa, and Michele (Dale) Williams of Flowery Branch; grandchildren, Chan Cash, Jace Williams, and Kenzie Cash; sister, Melvina Farrer Blocker of Wadley; and a niece and nephews.

Mr. Aubrey Jackson Ledger Jr., 54, of Martinez entered into rest on Friday, Oct. 30, 2015, at his residence. 

Mr. Ledger was a native of Augusta, but had lived in Bartow for most of his life. He was the son of the late Aubrey Jackson Ledger Sr. and Doris Ann Rachels Ledger. Before retiring, Mr. Ledger worked for J.P. Stevens as a line operator and was a member of Bartow Baptist Church.

Mr. Solomon Alva “Al” Newsome, 84, of Augusta entered into rest on Thursday, Oct. 29, 2015, at his residence.
Mr. Newsome, son of the late Sam Newsome and Florine Hardin Newsome, was born in Jefferson County, and graduated from Stapleton High School in 1950. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He and his wife owned and operated A&C Hardware for many years. He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church and Green Meadows Country Club.

Memorial services were held on Monday, Nov. 2, 2015, at noon at Chance and Hydrick Funeral Directors Chapel, with Rev. Todd Wiggins officiating.

Mr. Thornton was a native of Washington County, born to Gloria Ann Thornton Fort and the late Lonnie Comer Passmore in Augusta. He was a member of the Pine Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Davisboro. He was a 1981 graduate of Washington County High School. He served in the U.S. Marines, and held several of jobs with Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Duraline and Thermo King, Inc. He was currently employed at the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and Johnson County Sheriff’s Office as a jailer.

Mr. John Willie Avery, 71, of Wrens entered into rest on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2015, at 11:42 p.m. at Georgia Regents Hospital, Augusta.

Mr. Avery was born on March 18, 1944, to the late George Edgar Avery and Adell Ingram Avery in Jefferson County. He attended the Jefferson County School System. Mr. Avery joined Lofton AME Church, Wrens, at an early age. He married Louise Thomas on April 6, 1964. He was employed at Hamburg Industries for 14 years and Air Balance (Mestek) for 20 years.

Mrs. Bussell was a lifelong resident of Washington County, the daughter of the late Brooks and Elizabeth Johnson. She was a member of Mt. Nebo Primitive Baptist Church, Mitchell, where she attended all her life. She retired as a supervisor from Delta Apparel after 48 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, George Bussell.

Miss Lockhart was a native of Burke County. She was born to Isaiah Lockhart Sr. and the late Margaree “Bunch” Brady Lockhart in Richmond County. At an early age, she joined Eden Missionary Baptist Church, where she served on the Kitchen Committee. She was a 1987 graduate of Waynesboro High School. She was employed as an EMT and home healthcare worker for several years, and later worked and retired in May 1999 as a LPN with Gracewood Hospital.

Dr. James Luther Mays, 94, entered into rest on Thursday, Oct. 29, 2015.

A memorial service will be held at Watts Chapel at Union Presbyterian Seminary on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015, at 2 p.m.  

Dr. Mays was born in Louisville, son of James Allen Mays and Ruth Irene Mosteller. He was educated at Louisville Academy and Erskine College. In 1942, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, where he served in both the European and Pacific theaters. After the war, he attended Columbia University and then entered Union Theological Seminary, Virginia. He was a Fellow at the University of Basel, Switzerland, and received his doctorate at the University of Manchester, England. During his tenure, he taught as a Fulbright Professor at the University of Goettingen, Germany. He served two pastorates before joining the faculty of Union Theological Seminary, where he was a member of the faculty. He published commentaries on the prophetic books of the Bible and the book of Psalms. During his career, he served as editor of the journal, Interpretation, and was the founder and general editor of the commentary series, Interpretation. After his retirement, Dr. Mays participated in research and educational programs of the Center for Theological Inquiry at Princeton. He was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, Richmond, Va., The Providence Forge Fishing Club and a senior member of the Old Testament Fishing Society. Dr. Mays was a resident of Covenant Woods retirement community, Hanover County, Va.

Mr. Padgett was a lifelong resident of Avera, a son of the late Zeke and Estelle Padgett and Dave and Lena Padgett. He was a lifelong member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Avera, and retired as supervisor from Thermo King after 35 years of service. Mr. Padgett served on Avera City Council for eight years.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2015, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Avera, with Rev. Frank Thigpen and Rev. John Beck officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Carlton Junior Black, 81, of Martinez entered into rest on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2015.

A native of Augusta, Mr. Black was retired transpiration driver for Gulf/BP. After retirement, he began working in parts delivery for Bob Richards Toyota. He was a member of Lighthouse Ministries Services (ALMS). Mr. Black was an U.S. Army veteran.

Mr. Vincent Cannida of Louisville entered into rest on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015, at Georgia Regents Medical Center, Augusta.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2015, at 2 p.m. at Henderson Grove AME Church, Sandersville. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Cannida was a native of Washington County, but moved to Jefferson County about 20 years ago. He was born to the late Frank Archer Sr. and Marie Kelsey in Washington County. He was a member and trustee at the Henderson Grove AME Church. He was a 1981 graduate of Washington County High School. Mr. Cannida was the owner and operator of Vincent Cleaning Services and Vincent Cooking and Catering.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Lorene Archer, Johnny Archer Sr., Tommy Cannida, Melvin Archer, Jimmy Archer, Sallie Watts and Mildred Wright.

Survivors include his children, Brianna M. Cannida and Varissa J’Mya Cannida, both of Louisville; stepson, Specialist E4 La’ Stavius Hunt, Camp Stanley, South Korea; siblings, Annie Mae Lawson, Sarah Hudson and Willie Frank Cannida, all of Tennille, Francis Cannida, Ethlean Dixon, Phyllis Cannida, Lynda (Lemuel) White, Theresa Archer, Linda Faye Archer, Marion Cannida and Frank Archer Jr., all of Sandersville, Patricia Archer, Macon, Willie Lee (Reba Mae) Cannida, Philadelphia, Pa., and Calvin Archer, Atlanta; mother of his children, Diahann Cannida of Louisville; sister-in-law, Linda Robinson Archer, Tennille; friend, Martha Poole, Sandersville; family, Pauline Hines, Mary and James Cook and Paula Prather, all of Louisville; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Dr. John Stanton Evans Jr., 94, of Forest, Va., entered into rest on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2015.

Dr. Evans was born Oct. 12, 1921, in Camilla to the late John Stanton Evans and Elizabeth Burson. He received a BSIA from Berry College in 1942 and immediately volunteered for the Army Air Force, where he became a radioman-gunner for the duration of WWII. He then entered Emory, University where he obtained a master’s degree in physics and met and married Mary Lonnie Dixon. They moved to Knoxville, Tenn., where Dr. Evans completed the requirements for a Ph.D in physics. He began working at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) in Hampton, Va., in 1952. NACA soon became NASA, and he worked for 30 years contributing to the Mercury, Gemini, Viking, Apollo and Scramjet programs.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Avera, with Rev. Tommy Anderson officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lonnie Dixon; daughters, Frances Elizabeth Evans and Mary Jane Adkins (Dan Adkins); son, John Stanton Evans III (Dana Dupree Evans); and grandchildren, Dr. Joshua David Evans (Erin Lewis Evans), Laura Elizabeth Evans and John Daniel Evans.

Mr. David Lewis Harper, 78, of Norwood entered into rest on Nov. 14, 2015.

Mr. Harper was born in Norwood to the late Roy Lee Harper and Evie Brewer Harper. He was a lifelong resident of Warren County and was the owner and operator of Harper’s Electric and Plumbing. Mr. Harper served on the Norwood City Council for six years and was mayor for the past 25 years. He was a member of Norwood United Methodist Church.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2015, at Norwood United Methodist Church, with Rev. Don Richards, Rev. David Jenkins and Jimmy Waller officiating. Interment followed at Scruggs Cemetery, Norwood.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Billy Harper, James Harper and Carl Harper.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Sybil Nichols Harper; daughters, Pam (David) McCord of Norwood, and Donna (Mark) Phillips of Gibson; brother, Charles (Mary Bessie) Harper of Warrenton; sister, Helen (Lewis) Newsome of Warrenton; grandchildren, Alicia (Dustin) Usry, and Brandon (Cassie) Phillips; and great-grandchild, Layla Usry.

Mr. George Odis Hughes, 92, of Thomson entered into rest on Nov. 12, 2015, at University Hospital-McDuffie.

Mr. Hughes was born in Glascock County, and was one of 11 children born to the late David Hughes and the late Annie Mae Dismuke Hughes. At an early age, Mr. Hughes joined Fellowship Baptist Church, Gibson. He moved to Thomson, where he became founder and owner of Hughes Furniture and Mattress Gallery with more than 65 years of service. He has served as a city councilman, as a member of the Downtown Development Authority and Industrial Development Board, and he was currently serving as chairman of the Department of Family and Children Services Advisory Board. He was one of the founding directors of McDuffie Bank and Trust and was director emeritus of State Bank and Trust. Mr. Hughes was a member of First Baptist Church, Thomson, and the Men’s Bible Class. He served as former Training Union Leader and on many church committees. He was also a Mason and Shriner.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015, at First Baptist Church, Thomson, with Rev. David Lambert officiating. Interment followed at Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Sara Neal Hughes.

Survivors include his daughters, Sandra Ann Hughes (Don) Clauson of Martinez, and Mary Linda Hughes of Thomson; brother, Gene Hughes (Jane) of Thomson; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Hughes of Thomson; and grandchildren, Caleb Clauson-Hughes, Sara Blackmon- Hughes, Grace Blackmon-Hughes and Jimmy Blackmon.

Rev. Donald Formby Lumpkin of Louisville entered into rest on Thursday, Nov. 11, 2015.

Rev. Lumpkin was the youngest of 11 children born to the late Paul and Leila Maybelle Formby Lumpkin on Dec. 7, 1930. He is a graduate of Tennessee Temple University. Rev. Lumpkin spent more than six decades preaching primarily in small churches in and around his hometown of Rome. In 1960, he took the full-time pastorship of Snow Springs Baptist Church, Adairsville, and then moved to Emerson Baptist Church in 1969. In 1971, Rev. Lumpkin and his family moved to Augusta, where he served as associate pastor of Curtis Baptist Church, before moving to Wadley Baptist Church, Wadley, in 1972. Seven years later, he became a pastor of Jackson First Baptist Church, Jackson, S.C., where he spent 16 years. In 1996, he returned to Jefferson County, where he had a short stint at Moxley Baptist Chuch, then spent more than 15 years at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Avera. He retired from full-time preaching in 2012 at age 82, but continued to speak off and on as his health allowed.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Avera.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Joan Head Lumpkin; children, David Lumpkin of Statesboro, Sharon Tomlinson of Swainsboro, Tim Lumpkin of Louisville, and Russ Lumpkin of Evans; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Thomas Christopher “Chris” McMaugh, 50, of Ranger entered into rest surrounded by his family on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2015, at Floyd County Medical Center, Rome.

Per his request, cremation will be under the direction of Georgia Cremation Center, Acworth, with a family interment service to be scheduled and announced at a later date.

Mr. McMaugh was born Sept. 9, 1965, in Atlanta, and graduated from Cherokee County High School, Acworth. He worked in construction and manufacturing. Mr. McMaugh had suffered various health issues in the last two years.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Cecil “Shaz” Futch.

Survivors include his daughter, Britney (Nick) German of Cumming; granddaughter, Addy German of Cumming; mother, Suzanne F. (Robert H. Jr.) Powers of Midville; father, Paul Thomas McMaugh of Ranger; grandmother, Fannie Mae Lawson Futch of Vero Nursing Home, Wadley; sister, Kimberly McMaugh Pichardo; nieces, Sophia and Seidy Pichardo of Dhaka, Bangladesh; aunt, Cecilia F. Mrs. Caroline Fulghum Oglesby, 86, of Swainsboro entered into rest on Friday, Nov. 13, 2015, at her home.

Mrs. Oglesby was a native of Midville, a graduate of Summertown High School, a member of the Summertown Garden Club and Midville First Baptist Church. She retired as a tax assessor for Emanuel County.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Peebles-Curry Memorial Chapel, with Rev. Phil Wilson officiating. Interment was in Midville City Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Danny Russell Oglesby; parents, Joseph Carlos and Georgia Quinney Fulghum; sons, Tony Darrell Oglesby and Russell Carlos “Rusty” Oglesby; and brother, George James Fulghum.

Miss Peters was born in Gladwin, Mich., to Ellyn Mae and the late Earl Chester Peters. She was a homemaker.

Mr. Roy Jackson Sanders of Cross-Green Community entered into rest on Thursday, Oct. 29, 2015, at Memorial Hospital, Savannah.

Mr. Sanders was born to the late Wayne and Rosa Murphy Sanders on Oct. 14, 1949.  He was educated in Jefferson County schools. At an early age, he joined San Clair Baptist Church. He was a retiree of Fulghum Fiber, working for more than 20 years as a machine operator, and also did mechanic work.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2015, at 1 p.m. at San Clair Baptist Church, Wadley, with Rev. Michael Thomas officiating and Minister Terry Madison presiding. Burial was in Green Cemetery, Cross-Green Community.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Gladys Williams and Gaynell Tennyson; and brother, C.D. Sanders.

Mrs. Mary Agnes “Aggie” Williams Secord, 91, of Grovetown entered into rest on Friday, Nov. 13, 2015, at Hall Personal Care Home, Augusta. 

One of six children born to the late Mary Lou Walden Williams and the late Albert Randolph Williams, Mrs. Secord was a native of Jefferson County. At the age of 10, the family moved to Glascock County, where she attended school, played basketball and was a 1943 graduate. After working on a farm for several months, she went to business school and was hired by civil service as a clerk at Robbins Air Force Base, Warner Robins, after which she transferred to Atlanta, retiring with 30 years of service. Upon retirement, she moved to Columbia County.

Funeral services were held at Mt. Zion Congregational Methodist Church, Mitchell, at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2015, with Rev. Tony Mims officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Aubrey Williams and Nan Lee Griswell.

Survivors include her husband, Clayton Charles Secord; son, Steve Ashley (Katherine) of Jacksonville, Fla.; siblings, Albert R. Williams of Augusta, John W. Williams of Savannah, and Florrie W. Hughes of Dearing; great-niece-in-law, Belinda Bridges; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Susan Lorena Stone White, 91, of Savannah, formerly of Swainsboro, entered into rest on Monday, Nov. 9, 2015.

A native of Turbeville, S.C., Mrs. White was born to the late Samuel Stone and Elizabeth Bertell McElveen Stone. She attended high school in Moncks, S.C. She was a registered nurse, working with Candler Hospital, Savannah, for many years. 

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2015, at Sardis Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Swainsboro, with Jerry Taylor officiating.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Russell Talmadge White.

Mrs. Carr was a native of Jefferson County, born to the late Herman Davis and Eudell Paschal-Kelly. She was married the late George Carr Sr. and attended Jefferson County Public School System. At an early age, she joined Woodlawn Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as a member of the choir, and was a member of the Spring Bethel Benevolent Society. She was retired from Thermo King, Inc., after 30 years. 

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2015, at 1 p.m. at Woodlawn Missionary Baptist Church, Louisville, with Rev. Carl W. Simmons Jr. as eulogist. Burial followed in Spring Bethel Benevolent Society Cemetery, Louisville.

Miss Lucy Renea Harris Johnson, 79, of Bartow entered into rest on Monday, Nov. 16, 2015, at her residence.

Miss Johnson was born in Coweta County to the late Lubie Carl Harris and Lillie Mae Gertrude Bunn. She lived in Bartow for many years. She retired from Paytex Corporation and was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Ann Faulkner Mosley.

Survivors include her daughters, Heather Thompson, Susan Youmans, Loretta Kyle and Susan Castro; son, Jeffrey Thomas Faulkner; brother, Alvin Harris; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mr. Wilbur Carlton Johnson, 82, of Warrenton entered into rest on Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2015, at University Hospital, Augusta.

Mr. Johnson, a native and lifelong resident of Warren County, was the son of the late G.B. and Erma Hill Johnson. He retired after 34 years of service with the Georgia Department of Transportation as an Area Engineer. A 1951 graduate of the Warren County High School, Mr. Johnson was a member of the Glascock County Farm Bureau, member for 60 years and past master of Franklin Masonic Lodge No. 11, and was a former member of the Board of Trustees at Briarwood Academy. Mr. Johnson was a member of Johnson United Methodist Church.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19, 2015, at Johnson United Methodist Church, with Rev. Don Richards officiating. Burial, with Masonic Rites, followed in Johnson Cemetery.

He was preceded in death by a brother, David T. Johnson.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Marjorie Hart Johnson; three sons, Timothy C. Johnson, Townsend, Thomas R. (Kathy) Johnson, Bastonville, and Tony H. Mr. Ben Davis Sr., 80, of Orlando, Fla., entered into rest on Thursday, Nov. 19, 2015.

Mr. Davis was born to Ben Trumpler and Martha Davis on Sept. 15, 1935 in Louisville, the first of five children. He was raised by his grandparents, Julia Davis and Charlie Davis. He attended Jefferson County High School, Louisville. Upon graduation, he entered the U.S. Army on July 17, 1954, and served until June 17, 1956. After leaving the military, he married Lizzie Davis. He also worked in construction. 

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 28, 2015, at 1 p.m. at Agape Assembly Baptist Church, Orlando, Fla., with Minister Gregory Davis as eulogist. Interment, with full military honors, was in Washington Park Cemetery, Orlando, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; wife, Lizzie; brothers, Charlie Davis “Price” and Daniel Davis; sister, Elizabeth Fann; and aunts, Julia Mae Goodman and Nancy Fleming.

Mr. Mack “Sonny Boy” Fields, 74, of Bartow entered into rest on Friday, Nov. 27, 2015, at Jefferson Hospital, Louisville.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015, at 1 p.m. at Faith Memorial CME Church, Louisville, with Rev. Vernon White officiating and Rev. Willie Tomlin presiding. Interment will be in Ebenezer Cemetery.

Mr. Fields was born on Nov. 4, 1941, in Bartow to the late Lacy and Pecola Warthen Fields. At a young age, he joined Ebenezer CME Church. He received his education in the Jefferson County School System. He was a retired welder from Thermo King-Ingersoll Rand Corp.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Cora Flournoy, Vastha Jordan, Ruby Mae Mountain, Cleo Atkins, Lottie Wells, Frances Dixon, Cora Fields, Elizabeth Fields, Tommy Lee Fields, Johnny Fields, Luke Fields, Lacy Fields Jr. and Robert Lewis Fields.

Survivors include his children, Kenneth Fields (Tracy), Hubert Fields (LaShondra), Gail Fields, Tammy Renfroe and Faye Fields; sisters, Betty Fields, Annie Carter (Nick) of Mt. Vernon, N.Y., Rose Prince of Bronx, N.Y., and Martha Brown of Bartow; grandchildren, Dwight Huggins Jr., Allison Renfroe, Tyler Fields, Terrance Thomas and Malcom Thomas; step-granddaughter, Shericka Lawrence; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mrs. Mary Lou Walker-Jones, 94, entered into rest on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015.

Mrs. Walker-Jones was born on June 30, 1921, in Keysville to Joe and Willie Idella Walker. She was the widow of the late Thomas Oliver Jones. Mrs. Walker-Jones was a member, Usher and Mother of the Church at Mt. Horeb Baptist Church, Matthews.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2015, at Mt. Horeb Baptist Church, Matthews, at 11 a.m.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers; sisters; children, Dorothy M. Jones, Mary E. Jones, Bernice Jones Whitfield, Deacon Thomas O. Jones, Deacon Joe M. Jones, Brank Y. Jones and Ricky C. Jones Sr.; and one grandchild.

Survivors include her children, Fannie L. Jones (Richard Berry) and Rev. Dr. Willie L. Jones Sr. (Christine), both of Wrens, Deacon Leonard B. Jones (Helen), Warner Robins, Deacon John J. Mr. Roy Thomas McGahee, 81, of Stapleton entered into rest on Friday, Nov. 27, 2015, at his residence.

One of four boys born to the late Alice Louise Sheppard McGahee and the late George Carpenter McGahee Sr., Mr. McGahee was a lifelong resident of Jefferson County, living within a mile of his birthplace. He married his wife Betty Brown McGahee in 1958. He retired with 35 years of service from the Georgia Department of Transportation, where he purchased materials and maintained stock in the Tennille office. Mr. McGahee began serving at Waldens United Methodist Church on Aug. 7, 1947, until he was no longer physically able. He was a steward and served as secretary/treasurer of the Men’s Club for more than 40 years. He was a member of Woodmen of the World and the Sheriff’s Association.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 30, 2015, at Waldens United Methodist Church, Avera, with Rev. Tommy Anderson officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Johnny Samuel McGahee.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Betty Brown McGahee; children, Joy McGahee Hadden (Murray) and Mike McGahee; brothers, Maurice McGahee (Sydney) and George Carpenter McGahee Jr. (Darlene); and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Patricia Mahaley Gay Murphy, 69, of Thomson entered into rest on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2015, at University Hospital, Augusta.

One of two children born to the late Essie Katie Newsome Gay and the late Johnny Lee Gay, Mrs. Murphy was a native of Washington County, but grew up in Jefferson County, moving to McDuffie County in 1974 when she married. She worked as a seamstress for Moxley Manufacturing. 

A celebration of life service was held at Purvis Community Center, formerly Purvis School House, on Sunday, Nov. 29, 2015, at 12:30 p.m., with Rev. Ralph Kitchens officiating.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, William Hampton Murphy Sr.

Survivors include her daughters, Emily E. Howell (Wayne) and Beatrice M. Floyd (Lewis); brother, Richard Gay; grandchildren, John Howell, Dewey Howell, Chris Howell, Hampton Floyd, Mahaley Floyd and Pierce Floyd; and great-granddaughter, Christina Ann Howell.

Mr. Alex Oliphant of Augusta entered into rest on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2015.

Mr. Oliphant, a native of Wrens, retired from the V.A. Medical Center as a nursing assistant after 33 years of service.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 28, 2015, at 11 a.m. at B. A Williams Memorial Chapel, with Minister JoAnne Saunders officiating. Burial was in Fort Jackson National Cemetery, Columbia, S.C.

Mr. Gerald Johnson “Gerry” Allen, 81, of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., entered into rest on Saturday, Nov. 28, 2015, at Mt. Pleasant Hospital.

A native of East Point, Mr. Allen was a son of the late John Edward Allen and Lula Johnson Allen. He graduated from Russell High School, East Point. Mr. Allen was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving from 1957 until 1961, when he was appointed a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy Reserves and served until 1965. He was a member of the U.S. Navy’s Hurricane Hunters. He received a bachelor’s degree in forestry in 1956 from the University of Georgia and worked 40 years in forestry, primarily with Union Camp. He was a member of Springfield Methodist Church, former Vidalia Rotary Club member and served one term on the Vidalia City Council and was an editorial columnist for the Vidalia Advance Newspaper.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 3, 2015, at Louisville City Cemetery, with Dr. Bill Daniel officiating.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Dr. John Edward Allen Jr. and Thomas Erwin Allen.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Gayle Carroll Allen of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; son, Gerald J. Allen Jr. of Valley Glen, Calif.; daughter, Leslie Allen Lane of Mt. Mrs. Marion J. Penrow Askew, 85, of Vidette entered into rest on Thursday, Dec. 3, 2015, at her residence.

Mrs. Askew was born on May 23, 1930, in Jefferson County to the late Era and Claude Gray. She was a resident of Vidette, a member of Gough Baptist Church and attended Burkehaven Chapel, Waynesboro. Mrs. Askew was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Floyd T. Penrow; and second husband, Quinton Askew.

Mrs. Easter Mae Davis, 76, of Charlotte, N.C., entered into rest on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2015, at her residence.

Mrs. Davis was born on April 9, 1939, in Avera to the late Dolphus and Onnie Brown Davis. She moved to New Jersey where she became an Eastern Star. She was married to the late Thomas Elvis Estes Jr. and had four children with him. She worked as a machinist and housekeeper. 

Funeral services were held on Friday, Dec. 4, 2015, at 1 p.m. at Magnolia Baptist Church, Avera, with Rev. Wallace Peeples officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Rosetta “Etta” Freeman Habersham entered into rest on Sunday, Nov. 29, 2015, at Doctors Hospital, Augusta.

Mrs. Habersham was born on Dec. 9, 1925, to the late Mary Lou Turner Freeman and she was raised by the late Fred Freeman. She attended Jefferson County Public Schools. At an early age, she became a member of the Wrens Chapel AME Church, Wrens. In 1940, she married Fred Smith and had two sons. She married Allen Habersham on Dec. 31, 1948.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Dec. 4, 2015, at 3 p.m. at Harts Grove Baptist Church, Stapleton, with Rev. Dr. Willie L. Jones presiding and Rev. Quinzel E. Chestnut I as eulogist. Interment was in Wrens Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Wrens.

She was preceded in death by her sons, Freddie Smith and John Willie Smith; brother, John Willie Freeman Sr.; and sister, Mary Alice Andrews.

Mr. Billy Hadden, 79, of Gibson entered into rest on Friday, Dec. 4, 2015, at University Hospital.  

Mr. Hadden was a native of Jefferson County, but had lived in Gibson for many years. He was a son of the late Doe and Susie Usry Hadden. He retired after many years of service as a supervisor from EZ-Go Textron.             

Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 6, 2015, at Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery, with Rev. Jacky Downs officiating.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Connie Kirkendall Hadden; son, Victor Hadden; and brothers, Ray Hadden and Johnny Hadden.

Mrs. Frances C. “Frankie” Horton, 92, of Waynesboro entered into rest on Sunday, Dec. 6, 2015, at Brentwood Health and Rehabilitation Center.

A native and lifelong resident of Burke County, Mrs. Horton was the daughter of the late Otis Cliett and Fannie Trowbridge Cliett. She graduated from Georgia Teachers College and worked 30 years as a clerk with the ASCS Office, Burke County. Mrs. Horton was a lifelong Presbyterian, and was a member of Vidette Presbyterian Church and Waynesboro First Presbyterian Church.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2015, at Rose Dhu Cemetery, Vidette, with Rev. Tom Oliver officiating.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Manton Horton Sr.; and brother, Otis Cliett Jr.

Miss Martha Pace, 92, of Lawrenceville entered into rest on Monday, Nov. 23, 2015.

Miss Pace was retired from the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company, where she worked for 48 years. She was a member of Hamilton Mill Presbyterian Church, a former member of Midway Presbyterian Church and a charter member of Glen Haven Presbyterian Church, Decatur. Miss Pace spent her final years at The Bridge At Lawrenceville.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015, at A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home, Decatur, with Rev. Jeff Davis officiating. Interment was at Redan Cemetery.

Mr. Michael Ray Peavy of Louisville entered into rest on Friday, Nov. 20, 2015.

Mr. Peavy was an artisan and craftsman, having worked with Tony Schweitzer and Savannah River Art Glass. His work resides in churches and residences in the area. He owned a stained glass shop in Atlanta. He also worked on restorations and historical Augusta projects.

A celebration of life service was held on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015, in North Augusta, S.C.

He was preceded in death by his aunt, Betty; uncle, James; father, Paul; mother, Nancy; grandmother, Mozelle “Mimi;” and grandfather, Alfred Gary.

Mrs. Jeanette Lee Sanford, 50, of Griffin entered into rest on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2015. 

Mrs. Sanford was born in Washington and reared in Washington County. She was the daughter of the late Theodore E. “Ted” Sanford and the late Sally Louella Balkwell Sanford. Mrs. Sanford was a homemaker.

Mrs. Mary Ellen Paster Sebastian, 86, of Stapleton entered into rest on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015, at Gibson Health and Rehabilitation Center. 

Mrs. Sebastian was born to the late Pauline Pittman Timm and the late J.A. Paster in Green Bay, Wis., living there until she was 12 when her mother moved them to San Diego, Calif., where she graduated high school. Mrs. Peaster served as a WAC from November 1948 to April 1952, taking an honorable discharge when she married her husband, a soldier in the Army, in Japan. The family lived in Kansas and Germany before being stationed at Fort Gordon and settling in Augusta. She was a homemaker. 

Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 7, 2015, at Wrens Memorial Cemetery.

Survivors include her children, George R. Sebastian (Loretta) of Phoenix, Ariz., V. Marie Sebastian of New Bern, N.C., O. David Sebastian (Dawn) and John D. Mrs. Tennant was born on Aug. 2, 1934, in Louisville, tot eh late Ples and Bessie Flournoy. She graduated from Jefferson County High School, School of Cosmetology and Georgia State University. She was employed with EOC of Atlanta, Morris Brown College and Hands on Atlanta. Mrs. Tennant attended Higher Ground Empowerment Center where she served in the E. Hall Special, Missionary and Deaconess Board.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Dec. 4, 2015, at 1 p.m. at Higher Ground Empowerment Center, Atlanta, with Overseer Dexter L. Johnson as eulogist.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and 12 siblings.

Mrs. Ann Holliday Bryant, 79, of Athens entered into rest on Monday, Dec. 14, 2015.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 18, 2015, at Louisville City Cemetery.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at Louisville United Methodist Church.

A native of Athens, Mrs. Bryant was the daughter of the late Marion Page Holliday and Henry Campbell Holliday. She attended Athens High and then went to Sullens, Bristol, Tenn., for her senior year and graduated from there. Mrs. Bryant earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology and sociology from the University of Georgia and her post-graduate degree in microbiology from the Medical College of Georgia. She was a member of the Louisville United Methodist Church and the Louisville Garden Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Q.L. Bryant Jr.

Mr. William “Bill” Herbert Craven Jr., 86, of Waynesboro entered into rest on Friday, Dec. 4, 2015, in Aiken, S.C.

Mr. Craven was the son of the late Marion Easterling Craven and William Herbert Craven. He married his wife the late Lois Anita Kearse Craven in 1951. He was a 1950 graduate of Clemson University with a B.S. in agronomy. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War and as a major with the S.C. Army National Guard from 1954 to 1968. During his career as an agronomist, he worked as an agricultural extension agent in Edgefield and Saluda counties in South Carolina and in Burke County. He was also a writer and photographer. During his extension career, he received national recognition and multiple awards for his weekly agricultural news column and accompanying photographs. His agricultural pictorial collection is housed at the Burke County Office Park. During the 1970s and 1980s, Mr. Craven produced and hosted Agriculture Is King which aired weekly on Augusta’s WAGT-TV. He received many awards during his career, including the University of Georgia 1980 Distinguished Achievement in Public Service and Extension Award and was inducted into the Clemson A. Frank Lever County Agent Hall of Fame in 2015. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, where he was a certified lay speaker, Sunday school teacher and was on administrative boards of First United Methodist Church, Waynesboro, and St. Paul United Methodist Church, Saluda, S.C. He was an Eagle Scout and father of an Eagle Scout, and served as a District Governor of Lions International in South Carolina. In the 1990s, he served Clemson as president of the Agricultural Heritage Center at the Edisto Research and Education Center and was chairman of the Clemson University Board of Visitors. Mr. Craven also served on the Queensborough National Bank and Trust Company Board of Directors since 1992.

Graveside services were held at Old Mizpah Methodist Church Cemetery, South Bamberg County, S.C., on Thursday, Dec. 10, 2015, at 10:30 a.m.

A memorial service will was held at First United Methodist Church, Waynesboro, on Thursday, Dec. 10, 2015, at 3 p.m.

Survivors include his sister, Margaret Ann Craven Poteat; children, William H. Craven III (Harriet) and Pamela Ann Craven McKinsey (Tim); grandchildren, Sally Ann McKinsey Sisk (Drew) and Robert Craven McKinsey; two brothers-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Marie Brooks Dixon, 86, of Stapleton entered into rest on Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2015, at Select Specialty Hospital, Augusta. 

One of nine children born to the late Berta Alice Hadden Brooks and the late John Wesley Brooks, Mrs. Dixon was a lifelong resident of Jefferson County. She married and had two children, working as a seamstress in the garment industry, at the Dairy Queen in Wrens until it closed, and then, later in life, as a caregiver for Ruth Adams. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and sang in the choir.

Funeral services were held at James Funeral Home Chapel at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2015, with Rev. David Brooks officiating. Interment followed in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Avera.

She was preceded in death by her son, Tommy Dixon; and all of her siblings, Howard Brooks, George Brooks, Jimmy Brooks, Edgar Brooks, Homer Brooks, Oliver Brooks, Martha Malaczewski and Katie Lou Denton.

Mr. Bobby Joe Gates, 69, of Wrens entered into rest on Thursday, Dec. 10, 2015, at his residence.

Mr. Gates was born to the late Dorothy Lee Turner Gates and the late Jeffrey James Gates in Augusta, and was raised in Burke County. A carpenter by trade, he traveled the southeast framing houses and apartment complexes.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Louise Abernathy Gates; and grandchildren, Joseph James Gates and Emily Abigail Delacruz.

Mr. Gregory Johnson, 60, of Louisville entered into rest on Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2015, at his residence.

A native of Albion, Mich., Mr. Johnson was a graduate of Concord High School and Western Michigan University, where he received a bachelor’s of arts degree. He was a retired teacher with the Jefferson County Board of Education. In his 34 years of teaching, Mr. Johnson taught math and science at Carver Elementary and Louisville Academy. He also coached many sports teams at Louisville High School and Louisville Middle School, was a member of the Jefferson County Band Boosters, where he served as president for four years, and was a member of Louisville First Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 13, 2015, at Louisville First Baptist Church, with Rev. Jonathan Witt officiating.  Burial followed in Jefferson County Memorial Gardens. 

Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Jean Craven Johnson of Louisville; son, Corey (Jessica) Johnson of Augusta; daughter, Katherine Johnson of Athens; father and mother, Virgil and Wilma Johnson of Somerset, Ky.; brother, Michael Johnson of Indianapolis, Ind.; sister, Elizabeth Johnson of Fairfax, Va.; three nieces; one nephew; and many friends.

Mrs. Willie Bell Reese, 89, of Thomson entered into rest on Friday, Dec. 11, 2015, at Gibson Health and Rehabilitation Center.   

Mrs. Reese was born Dec. 25, 1925, in Glascock County, but had lived most of her life in Thomson. She married her husband on Nov. 9, 1940. She retired from Thomson Company after many years of service as a supervisor and had been a member of Mt. Zion since the age of 13. 

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 14, at Mt. Zion Congregational Methodist Church, with Rev. Al Kurtz and Rev. Tony Mimbs officiating.  Burial followed in Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens, Thomson. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Nora Hawkins Allen; and husband, William Watson Reese; brother, George D. Allen; and sisters, Kathleen Reese and Mary Emma Williams.

Survivors include her sisters, Ester Thompson of Macon, Frankie Edwards of White Plains, and Zylphia “Zip” Reese of Gibson; and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Mary Ellen Paster Sebastian, 86, of Stapleton entered into rest on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015, at Gibson Health and Rehabilitation Center. 

Mrs. Sebastian was born to the late Pauline Pittman Timm and the late J.A. Paster in Green Bay, Wis., living there until she was 12 when her mother moved them to San Diego, Calif., where she graduated high school. Mrs. Sebastian served as a WAC from November 1948 to April 1952, taking an honorable discharge when she married her husband, a soldier in the Army, in Japan. The family lived in Kansas and Germany before being stationed at Fort Gordon and settling in Augusta. She was a homemaker. 

Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 7, 2015, at Wrens Memorial Cemetery.

Survivors include her children, George R. Sebastian (Loretta) of Phoenix, Ariz., V. Marie Sebastian of New Bern, N.C., O. David Sebastian (Dawn) and John D. Miss Betty Jean Thigpen Chalker, 77, of Blythe entered into rest on Sunday, Dec. 13, 2015, at Keysville Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center.

Miss Chalker was one of seven children born to the late Annie Lou Gleason Thigpen and the late Robert Lee Thigpen. She was raised in the Bartow region, where she attended elementary school, then living in the Louisville area before moving to Blythe, where she has lived for the past 35 years. She worked at Stapleton Garment until it closed and other companies in the garment industry as a seamstress.

Funeral services were held at James Funeral Home Chapel at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 17, 2015, with Rev. Tommy Anderson officiating. Interment followed in the Waldens United Methodist Church Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Edna Mae Thigpen, Virginia Shelton, Dorothy Thigpen and Thelma Manning.

Mr. Ronnie Wayne Curl, 68, of Thomson entered into rest on Sunday, Dec. 20, 2015.

Mr. Curl was born in Swainsboro to the late Johnie Lee Curl and the late Ruby Dell Nunn Curl. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during Vietnam and retired after 30 years of service. Mr. Curl also retired as a sales associate with Crane Hardware, Jonesboro. He lived in Thomson for the past few years and was a member of Wrens Church of God.

Survivors include his wife, Dianne James Curl; sons, Johnie Wayne Curl, Nicholas Arren Curl, both of Jonesboro, Ronnie Lee Curl (Jennifer) of Chesterfield, Mich., Damon Ross O’Neal of Barnesville, and John James Jr. of Thomson; daughters, Brenda Newsome (Bobby) of Avera, and Sonya Govero (Raymond) of Tennessee; 18 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.

Funeral services were held at 2p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2015, Beggs Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Jason Burton, Pastor Rodney Chatman and Chaplain Leslie Nelson officiating. Interment followed in Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens, with full military honors.

Mrs. Kathryn Hobbs Green entered into rest on Saturday, Dec. 19, 2015, at her residence surrounded by her family. 

Mrs. Green was born Nov. 21, 1925, in Jefferson County. She retired from the Medical College of Georgia.  She was a member of First Baptist Church for more than 60 years and served in the nursery and on the Bereavement Committee.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 28, 2015, at First Baptist Church, Augusta. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Hamilton Green; and daughter, Ann Green Pennington Dozier. 

Survivors include her daughter, Kathryn Yates (William J.); grandchildren, Amanda Warr (Graham Pereira), Robert H. Pennington (Stacey) and Adam Pennington; great-grandchildren, Robert and Madison Pennington, Adam Pennington and Aida and Oliver Pereira.

Mrs. Mae Newsome Martin, 87, of Greensboro, N.C., entered into rest on Friday, Nov. 21, 2014, at Spring Arbor of Greensboro under the care of Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro.

Mrs. Martin was born in Glascock County on Sept. 16, 1927, to the late James Lawson Newsome and Dovie Morgan Newsome. She was a long-time resident of Harlem, and worked in the school system there for many years. She moved to High Point, N.C., in 2000.

Mrs. Martin requested that her body be bequeathed to the University of North Carolina for medical research. She and the other body donors were recognized at the Anatomy Memorial Service in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Dec. 7, 2015.

An interment service was held at Harlem Memorial Cemetery on Monday, Dec. 28, 2015, at 1 p.m. A celebration of life service at Harlem Baptist Church Family Life Center followed.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 46 years, Oscar Edward Martin; two brothers; three sisters; and one granddaughter.

Survivors include her children, Phillip Martin (Eva) of Ruther Glenn, Va., Rebecca Yates (James) of High Point, Valerie Nelson of Greensboro, N.C., and Anthony Martin (Kim) of Fairview, Tenn.; sisters, Betty Dixon (Harvey), Kingsland, and Myra Poole; 12 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials contributions may be made to The Alzheimer’s Association, or to Harlem Baptist Church, 105 W Milledgeville Road, Harlem, GA 30814.

Ret Air Force TSGT Sammie Durden Sr., 90, of Cameron, N.C., entered into rest on Sunday, Dec. 20, 2015, at the Womack AMC, Fort Bragg, N.C.

Mr. Durden was born on June 30, 1925, in Sandersville to the late Leo (Pinkie Brown) Durden. He joined the Army in 1945 and later transferred to the Air Force, where he retired after 20 years of service. Following military retirement, Mr. Durden was employed full-time as a barber. 

A celebration of life service was held on Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Magnolia Baptist Church, Avera, with Rev. Wallace Peeples and Rev. Terry Streeter officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Brown Durden; daughters, Pharalee Patricia Streeter and Sandra Durden; grandson, Wesley Durden Jr.; and siblings, Corine Bigham, Grady Durden, M.B. Durden, Leo Durden Jr., Ernest Durden, Geneva Pinkston, Walter Durden, Willie Albert Durden and Eva Mae Boatwright.

Survivors include his children, Sammie Durden Jr. of Raeford, N.C., Ronald Durden of Atlanta, Wesley Durden Sr. of Jackson, N.C., Robert Durden of Lillington, N.C., and Cheryl Durden of Fayetteville, N.C.; grandchildren, Kelly Durden and Patrina Streeter; three great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Elaine Belk Brinson Evans, 71, entered into rest on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016, at Jefferson Hospital, Louisville, after a lengthy illness and was surrounded by her family.

Born and reared in Twin City, Mrs. Evans was the daughter of the late Pauline Belk and Benjamin Lewis Brinson. She attended Emanuel County Institute and graduated as the valedictorian of the class of 1962.  She attended Stephens College, Columbia, Mo., and graduated from the University of Georgia, Athens, with a bachelor of arts degree in music. While at the University, she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta Social Sorority, the Georgia Singers, Sigma Alpha Iota Music Fraternity and Pi Kappa Phi Honorary Society. After her marriage to Wiley Clark Evans III, she moved to Bartow where she resided for the remainder of her life. She worked for the Jefferson County Department of Family and Children’s Services as a social worker and was a homemaker. She was a member of Bartow United Methodist Church, where she directed the choir, served as church music leader and taught Sunday school. She was also a soloist for the church and for special events such as weddings. She worked in the community and schools in numerous capacities and supported local groups and organizations.

Funeral services were held at Bartow United Methodist Church, Bartow, on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2016, at 2 p.m., with Rev. David Boggs and Rev. Franklin Sasser officiating.  Interment followed at Brinson Family Cemetery, Canoochee.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother Benjamin Lewis Brinson Jr. of Alpharetta; and nephew, Lane Edwards Brinson of Perry.

Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Wiley Clark Evans III; children, Wiley Clark Evans IV “Chip” (Gwen) and Matthew Brinson Evans “Matt” (Terrie), both of Bartow, and Paula Francis Evans Stallings (Randy) of Douglas; grandchildren, Wiley Clark Evans V, Anlee Ray Evans, William Charles Hendricks Jr., Matthew Brinson Evans Jr. and Hampton Wiley Evans, all of Bartow, and Henry Lane Stallings of Douglas; sisters-in-law, Judith P. Brinson of Alpharetta, and Jean Evans Dupree of Swainsboro; cousin, Maryann Brinson Brown of Twin City; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Pallbearers were her cousins, Dolan Edward Brown III and Mark Hendry Brown, both of Garfield, David Brinson Brown of Statesboro; nephews, Benjamin Lewis Brinson III of Dunwoody and Jonathan Belk Brinson of Alpharetta; and grandsons, Wiley Clark Evans V, William Charles Hendricks Jr. and Matthew Brinson Evans Jr., all of Bartow.

Mr. William Hatcher, 59, of Wrens entered into rest on Saturday, Dec. 26, 2015, at Georgia Regents Hospital, Augusta.

Mr. Hatcher was born in Thomson to the late Jimmy Hatcher and Marlene Moore.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016, at 11 a.m. at the residence.

Survivors include his wife, Mary L. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2016, at 3 p.m. at Gethsemane Baptist Church, Avera, with Rev. Jimmy Davis officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his daughter, Elizabeth (John) Adams, Augusta; sons, Eric Jones of Avera, and Fletcher (Judy) Jones of Augusta; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mr. William Walker “Pete” Lockhart Jr., 60, entered into rest on Dec. 29, 2015.

Mr. Lockhart was a native of Louisville, and had lived in Sandersville for 24 years before moving to Milledgeville this past year. He was the son of the late William Walker Lockhart Sr. and Dorothy Dixon Lockhart. Mr. Lockhart had worked at Ace Hardware, Sandersville, and was a member of Deepstep United Methodist Church.

Memorial services will be held on Jan. 17, 2016, at 2 p.m. at Deepstep United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Cathy Hudson Lockhart; sons, Justin (Lilly) Lockhart and Travis Lockhart; grandchildren, Cayden, Walker and Chloe Lockhart, all of Milledgeville; and sister, Cathy (Jimmy) Raines of Harrison.

Mr. Daniel Felton “Dano” Odom, 60, of Lizella, formerly of Sandersville, entered into rest on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2015.

Mr. Odom was born in Macon to the late Dee Odom and the late Lucy Smith Odom Bedwell. He was retired from the Georgia State Prison System as a correctional officer.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016, at 11 a.m. at May and Smith Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Paul Harris and Rev. Jason McClendon officiating. Burial was in Washington County Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include his son, Josh Odom (Tish) of Lizella; grandchildren, Zoey and Allyson, both of Lizella; sisters, Faye Odom Lewis and Kaye Odom McClendon, both of Sandersville, Sandra Odom Thompson (Van) of Tennille, and Judy Odom Harris (Paul) of Bartow; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Brenda Faye Robertson, 50, of Augusta entered into rest on Friday, Dec. 25, 2015, at University Hospital.

Mrs. Robertson was born in Augusta to the late Roy and Betty Kitchens Silas.

Memorial services were held on Monday, Jan. 4, 2016, at 6:30 p.m. at Thomas L. King Chapel, with Rev. Wayne Usry officiating.

Survivors include her daughter, Tiffany Gardenhire of Augusta; brothers, David Silas of Wilkes County, Allen Silas of Evans, and Robbie Silas of Augusta; sisters, Glenda Silas of North Augusta, S.C., and Patti Strength of Wrens; grandchildren, Jasmine Gardenhire, Jordan Gardenhire and Jadan Gardenhire; and several nieces and nephews.

Miss Joanne E. Whaley, 83, of Mayfield entered into rest on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2015, at Gibson Health and Rehab, Gibson, following an extended illness.

Miss Whaley was born in Hancock County to the late Emory Northern Whaley Sr. and the late Estelle Carr Whaley. She was the valedictorian of her high school class and a seamstress. Miss Whaley was a homemaker and a member of Horeb Baptist Church. 

Memorial services were held on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016, at 2 p.m. at Horeb Baptist Church, Mayfield.

Survivors include many nieces and nephews.
