Mr.William Chandler Lanier, who went by his mother’s maiden name, Chandler, passed from life to Life on Monday, July 4, 2016.
Chandler was born in Macon, on July 6, 1924 to Charles Fortson and Sarah Chandler Lanier.  He attended Lanier High School in Macon, went to North Georgia College (as had his father and grandfather) where he was the ranking officer in the Corps of Cadets, and president of ΣΝ.  There he met his future wife Sallie Mae Cook, of Covington, the prettiest and smartest girl on campus.  He finished up at the University of Georgia with a degree in Journalism, while Sallie went on Johns Hopkins.
Chandler and Sallie married at Clarkesville Presbyterian Church in 1948.
He worked for Eastern Air Lines then for Blue Bird Body Company, but had a calling to ministry and, with two children (Bill and Sarah) in tow, earned his degree in theology from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, where their third child Sallie was born.
His first church was Wadley Baptist, where he was the pastor from 1954 until 1961, and where his fourth child Homer was born.
Upon appointment as Southern Baptist representative to Tel Aviv, Israel in 1960, he arrived in 1961 by ship.  They served until 1989. During his ministry in Israel he served as moderator of the Baptist Convention in Israel, co-edited its tri-lingual (Hebrew, Arabic, English) managed the Convention’s only art gallery and bookstore in Tel Aviv, and served as pastor of the Baptist Village Congregation.
Upon retirement he and Sallie built a home on family land left to them by Sallie’s father, Homer Cook, just north of Clarkesville.
He continued to enjoy preaching, whenever asked, into his 91st year, at Clarkesville Baptist and Victory Home in Tallulah Falls.
As his strength declined, he and Sallie split their time between Clarkesville and Wesley Wood Towers in Atlanta.
As the end neared he had nightly dreams of heaven. The dreams were vivid and comforting; his parents are there, his older brother, who died in infancy, as are his friends.   He assessed a blessed life, and looked forward to the next one.  He was not in pain, and his mind remained sharp.  We should all be so fortunate.
Chandler died in the glad assurance of the blessed hope (Titus 2:12-13). We are relieved and not a little envious that Chandler exchanged “this earthly tent for a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens (II Cor. 5:1).”
He is survived by his wife, Sallie Mae Cook Lanier; children, Bill, Sarah, Sallie, and Homer; grandchildren, Bethany Dawn, Anne Marie, Leigh Ann, and David; and great-grandson William Shawn Maltbie.
A service to celebrate Chandler’s life is scheduled for 11 a.m., Saturday July 23, 2016 at Clarkesville Baptist Church, Clarkesville, Georgia.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Victory Home (PO Box 7, Tallulah Falls, Georgia, 30573), a rehabilitation center for men at which Chandler ministered for 20 years.
