Mr. William C. “Billy” Jordan, age 74, of Louisville, passed away Saturday Oct. 7, 2017.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, in the Louisville United Methodist Church with Rev. Peter Vermeulen and Mr. Joe Cheeks officiating.
Pallbearers were George Lightfoot, Lonnie Purvis, Billy Brank, Bobby Butts, Darren Cato, R.C. Smith and Tommy New. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, in the Blakely City Cemetery in Blakely, with Rev. Shawn Williams officiating.
Born and raised in Early County, Billy was the third of seven children. He attended public schools in Early County and Andrew College in Cuthbert. He served six years in the National Guard and worked in the finance and real estate business. Billy retired in 2006 with 33 years of service as a Georgia Farm Bureau Insurance agent.
Billy spent most of his life in Jefferson County and was very involved in the community. He was a member of the Louisville United Methodist Church for over 40 years, served as President and State VP of Jaycees, President of the Louisville Lions Club, founding board member of the Bank of Jefferson, member of the Jefferson County Historical Society and served on the Jefferson County Library Board. Billy enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing and working outside. After learning his great-great grandparents were married in Jefferson County in 1830, he entered the exciting world of genealogy, researching his family history and that of many notable Georgians as a full-time hobby. He enjoyed Georgia history and, several years ago, completed his pursuit to visit and photograph every courthouse in Georgia.
Billy was a hard worker, fiercely loyal to his family and a grateful steward of all he was given.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Barbara Portwood Jordan, his daughter, Christy Jordan Malcom (Curtis) of Gainesville and his son, William Daniel Jordan (Erin) of Lexington, KY; his three grandchildren - Clifton Pace and Ollie Durham Malcom and Iris Marie Jordan; two of his sisters, Judy Brank of Blakely, Delores (Jim) Baber of Crozet, VA, one of his brothers, LaDon Jordan Blakely, and his 10 nephews and three nieces.
He was preceded in death by his father, Carlton C. “Jack” Jordan; his mother, Mary Pace Jordan Chandler; his step-father, Homer Lester Chandler; two of his sisters, Dyanne Clinkscales, Janyce Smith, all of Blakely, one of his brothers, Lamar Jordan of Albany, and one brother-in-law, Roger Brank of Blakely.
The following was written by Billy five years ago as he and his wife, Barbara, made an outline of their final wishes.
“I want my friends and relatives to know that I lived in the best of times, in the best place in the world with the best family and friends possible. I was blessed with good health, a good job and a family second to none. I always felt blessed and that God had been good to me. But, even with all my blessings, I know I am a sinner, with many shortcomings, and have asked God for his forgiveness and the grace to be with Him.”
The Jordan family received friends 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9, 2017 at the funeral home.
