Mrs. Mary Dixon Evans, age 92 of Forest, VA, died Friday, March 31, 2017.
Graveside services will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 15, 2017 in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Avera with Rev. Tommy Harwell officiating.
Mary was born in Glascock County on Oct. 17, 1924, and was the daughter of Cyrus Hubert Dixon and Zulene Williams. She received a BS from Georgia State College for Women and a Master’s Degree in Chemistry from Emory University. She also met and married John S. Evans, Jr. while at Emory. While her husband was completing requirements for a Ph. D. at the University of Tennessee, she was employed as a research chemist by the Agricultural laboratory at the university. After moving to Williamsburg with her husband, she was employed as a research chemist by Dow Chemical Co. When Dow moved the research laboratory to Anderson, SC, she became a hostess at Colonial Williamsburg.
Mrs. Evans was preceded in death by her husband and her daughter, Frances Elizabeth Evans and is survived by daughter, Mary Jane Adkins (Daniel Adkins); son, John S. Evans, III (Dana Dupree Evans); grandchildren, Dr. Joshua David Evans (Erin Lewis Evans), Laura Elizabeth Evans and John Daniel Evans and great grandson, Everett Stanton Evans.
